Just a few months out of student life on the rolling green lawns of Haverford College, Philip Fretz was living in a small, remote West African city amid insect invasions, deadly snakes and coups. It was the tumultuous 1960s, in both the United States and Africa, and he had become an early recruit to the Peace Corps, founded in 1961. He was the first volunteer to be sent to teach English at the Kenema Technical Institute in Sierra Leone, a former British colony that had been left in stark poverty and underdevelopment when colonialism ended. Half a century later, he began to pore through the diaries he had kept, sporadically, during those two years in Kenema. When his father died in 1998, relatives found in his papers all the letters Philip had written home to his parents, recording his illnesses, his extraordinary adventures across West Africa, and the pain he felt watching his students struggle amid poverty and tribalism, in bare-bones classrooms without books and supplies, while keeping alive their hopes that they could have a brighter future.

Fascinating

In this well-written memoir, Fretz provides a fascinating account of his service as a Peace Corps volunteer in Sierra Leone in the late 1960s. During a tumultuous time that saw anti-war protests and race riots at home, and multiple coups in Sierra Leone within the course of his two years there, Fretz was able to make a small contribution, as an English teacher and ad hoc softball coach at the Technical Institute (trade school) in Kenema.. As his journal and his letters home demonstrate, he was a keen observer, and his accounts of traveling for hours by lorry on unpaved roads, or finding a deadly green mamba snake underneath the table at his house, or participating in a dance festival underline the reality of his situation: he, as were most Peace Corps volunteers, was sent to a small, underdeveloped town with little training and few resources at his disposal. It's a testament to his own strength of spirit that even as he became aware of the Peace Corps' idealistic facade, he was able to connect so well with his students and show that he really cared about their wellbeing. Highly recommended!

This book brought back memories of my 2 Peace Corps years in Sierra Leone in the 1960's. It was light pleasant reading. I would recommend it to anyone who has lived in Sierra Leone for any length of time. I was told to keep a daily diary while there and now regret not doing so.

An Introduction to Numerical Methods and Analysis addresses the mathematics underlying approximation and scientific computing and successfully explains where approximation methods come from, why they sometimes work (or don't work), and when to use one of the many techniques that are available. Written in a style that emphasizes readability and usefulness for the numerical methods novice, the book begins with basic, elementary material and gradually builds up to more advanced topics.

A selection of concepts required for the study of computational mathematics is introduced, and simple approximations using Taylor's Theorem are also treated in some depth.

The text includes exercises that run the gamut from simple hand computations, to challenging derivations and minor proofs, to programming exercises. A greater emphasis on applied exercises as well as the cause and effect associated with numerical mathematics is featured throughout the book. An Introduction to Numerical Methods and Analysis is the ideal text for students in advanced undergraduate mathematics and engineering courses who are interested in gaining an understanding of numerical methods and numerical analysis.

About the Author

James F. Epperson, PHD, is Associate Editor of Mathematical Reviews. Dr. Epperson received his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University, and his research interests include the numerical solution of nonlinear evolution equations via finite difference methods, the use of kernel functions to solve evolution equations, and numerical methods in mathematical finance.

very well written, but missing important topics

I would give this book 4 stars, but I had to give it 3 stars to counter the earlier review, which seems to be very skewed.

For the topics that are covered in the book, this book is extremely well written and readable, and it balances practical and theoretical aspects very well. This is not typical for numerical analysis books! Unfortunately, this book lacks some important topics that should be in an introductory textbook. For example, optimization is so important and ubiquitous in numerical computations, and it is no more advanced than eigenvalue problems and PDEs, so it is surprising to me the subject is not even mentioned in the book. Also the book does not have a section on numerical differentiation, but instead scattered it into sections 2.2 and 6.10.1 without introducing the concepts and terminology properly. These deficiencies make the book ill-suited as a primary textbook or a reference book. Heath's Scientific Computing book is at about the same level of exposure as this book and is equally well written, while being far more comprehensive.

What does it mean?

I found this text book to be well thought out and presented in a mannor that I could digest more easily. I actually enjoyed (as much as a person can) working these problems. At the end of the semester I had really used this text book and my understading of more advanced math concepts had reached a new level.

Blacks in American Sports

Got the package and saw two books. They came volumes 1 & 2. Got a chance to add a reference book on sports A-Z another must for my library. What book the big names came out but the Wake-Robin Golf Club was a surprise. While a few were omitted there is more than enough to make up for them. A great read!!

This book opened my eyes to intimacy the way God created it to be. Even though I am a woman married with children I read the book to equip myself to minister to the youth that I encounter. To let them know to wait until marriage. Dianna Hobbs shared some of her life testimonies of how she remained abstinent even when it was hard to do. Put God first and everything else will follow.
