About the Author
Scott A. Snell is the E. Thayer Bigelow Professor of Business Administration at Darden School of Business, where he teaches courses in Leadership and Strategic Management. Prior to joining the Darden faculty in 2007, Scott was professor and director of executive education at Cornell University's Center for Advanced Human Resource Studies, and a professor of management in the Smeal College of Business at Pennsylvania State University. Scott's research focuses on strategic human resource management. He was recently listed among the top 150 most-cited scholars in the field of management. He has worked with a number of Fortune 500 companies in the United States and Europe to align investments in talent and strategic capability. Scott is co-author of four books: Managing Human Resources, Management: Leading and Collaborating in a Competitive World, M: Management and Managing People and Knowledge in Professional Service Firms. Scott has served on the boards of: the Society for Human Resource Management Foundation, the Academy of Management's Human Resource Division, the Human Resource Management Journal, the Academy of Management Journal, and the Academy of Management Review.

George Bohlander is Professor Emeritus of Management at Arizona State University, where he taught human resources and labor relations classes. He received six outstanding teaching awards, including the Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award presented by the College of Business, and the ASU Parents Association Teaching Award given annually by the university. Dr. Bohlander has published more than 50 articles and monographs in professional and practitioner journals, such as National Productivity Review, HR Magazine, Employee Relations Law Journal, The Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Public Sector, and Labor Law Journal. He is also a consultant to public and private organizations and an active labor arbitrator. He received his M.B.A. from the University of Southern California and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Really informative book

I know that this is a text book, and as a HR major I was required to buy this book. the thing is that if my when my professor tells us to refer to the book i am glad that I bought this. For a person just staring out in the study of HR I would say this is a good starting point and that honestly I can see myself keeping this when I actually start my career just as a primer.

St Cassian in devotional format

Fr Jerome Bertram's translation of Cassian's De institutis is irreproachable. The book itself is well-presented and ideal for devotional reading, being compact, unlittered with commentary and even including a bookmark -- which is actually a curious thing, since the Conferences would have been better suited for this purpose. In any event, the book was published in a series that is designed to make important works of Christian spirituality available to a wide audience. It fills this role admirably. But scholars who are interested in the Institutes for whatever reason will likely find it disappointing that there are very few references to related early Christian material, or indeed to contemporary secondary literature.

Documentation, But not very agile

Ruping did a good job of covering the topic of software documentation, albeit somewhat generically, i.e. not that specific to software development. He quotes a lot of others in his book and identifies that the goal (of agile documenting) is 'light-weight but sufficient'. If you're working on developing a system for documenting software development (or really any other technical project) this would make a good reference, but start at the back of the book. He uses patterns in his book as his technique to cover the topic. They are recognized problems and solutions, and he lists all of them in the back of the book in thumbnail form. The middle of the book provides the elaboration. The first part of the book is his professional history (sorry Ruping, but not that interesting), and his how-to-use-the-book section.
The problem I had with the book is that I didn't see anything new and innovating. I didn't have an `ah-ha' moment where I finally understood the real principles behind 'agile' documentation. I didn't find this book 'agile' at all. I also did not agree with all of his solutions, most seemed cliché. But again, if you're looking for a reference on the topic of technical documentation - this is not bad.

Great concept

As a tech communicator with long experience in various engineering environments, I am enthused about the concepts espoused here. We need to write "documentation" the way we like to read "documentation"; it needs to have the content needed particularly by us, in the style we need, and concise and to the point when our need begs for that. We need to look toward long term relevance and up-to-dateness - of all technical information, especially technical reference information, and it is more likely to be so if it is concise and focused to start with. We are all scanners, doing stuff or acquiring information in a hurry, doing tasks in a hurry. Another book told about how a new guy on a project was given a thick document about the project. Two days later, he had a headache; couldn't get the picture. If he were given an agile-ly written doc, he would have gotten the picture. Ginny Redish (Letting Go of the Words) is another great one along the same thinking.

ONE distractor: He wrote the book with a bit of his own fluff. Maybe to give the book a slight bit of thickness. Could have been more to the point. An engineer I used to work with used to say "paid by the pound".

Disappointing, but ok for the intended reader

As a professional technical writer I was hoping to find insights on how to do my job in an Agile development environment, as my experience is in the slower-moving "waterfall" types of development. The book clearly says early on, but you couldn't tell from the description online, that it's really more about the design documentation that the development and test people will need to use among themselves. I wish I'd had a chance to borrow and skim for 10 minutes, I would have saved my money.

Given what it is, it's a good primer for developers to use for specs and so on. If those are well-done, the end-user docs are much easier to craft, so I'd recommend it to the intended audience.

Eerie Adventure with magic and sibling rivalry

It seems to me the stronger GYG books are the ones with multiple characters in them. This time your character is forced to interact with "your" sister and friend throughout the book, which adds more opportunity for interesting situations. The dialogue between the characters is actually believable and even made me chuckle a few times. The short summary is, you're at the mall with your friend Sid when your sister ducks into a magic shop (is that really even a thing?) and accidentally steals the owner's book of spells. The storyline where the characters visit an abandoned chemical factory has a great eerie atmosphere as well as the other storyline where you're dealing directly with The Magician himself. The really strange sidestory has you encountering a strange grandma and things get weird quickly. All in all, while a little forgettable, this book was fairly interesting, the writing well-paced, and just a general good read. I recommend.

Psychic fantasy science novel with a touch of horror, just enough to allow Simmons (Children of the Night, p. 564; Summer of Night, etc.) to keep his foot in that field as well. A promising device goes amiss into routine thuggishness and ends in ``probability reality.'' Gail and Jeremy Bremen are telepaths who met and married ten years ago. Together, they find relief from the psychobabble of voices around them, the minds of people they meet and a larger psychobabble grounded in the whole ``wave'' of human intelligence. When Gail dies of an inoperable tumor behind her eye, Jeremy freaks out, burns down their house, abandons his professorship, and goes on the road. In Florida, he witnesses a mob murder, is kidnapped by the mob, later escapes. Taken up by Miz Morgan, a rancher, he finds himself facing razorblade dentures over his important parts and escapes from her too. In Las Vegas, his mind-reading stands him well at the poker table; he's a huge winner, but the mob is back. After saving his life still again, he winds up in the hospital, enters the closed- off mind of a retarded blind boy, and finds Gail alive in a probable reality that the boy has put together from particles of Jeremy's mind. Throughout, in flashback, we are treated to far-out wave-particle theory about a unified wave of human consciousness that allows for transfer of mind or being. From this description, you might expect a lyrical novel featuring great psychic leaps of imagination. Simmons leaps, but where he lands in a parallel probability is far less vividly experienced than possibilities allow. The nostalgic opening chapter of Summer of Night is better than this whole novel. 'Hell is other people'

It is a rare occurrence for me to read a book straight through from sunset to sunrise, but "The Hollow Man" deserved that kind of attention, even though it is very grim reading--in Dan Simmon's world, it is better to be brain-damaged than normal, drunk or drugged rather than sober, possibly dead rather than alive.

After his wife dies, Simmon's telepathic hero descends into a peculiarly American hell of gangsters, cardboard cities, rabid gangs, child molesters, and serial killers--there are many references to Dante in this book, and although Sartre isn't directly quoted, I'd guess that the main message of "The Hollow Man" is 'Hell is other people.'

What can a brilliant mathematician do when his perfect relationship with his telepathic wife ends with her death? He can commit suicide quickly or commit suicide slowly. Jeremy Bremen tries both ways.

I didn't even try to follow the equations in this book. I had my fill of diffie q's when I was in college. You might be interested in figuring out whether the author is merely waving his hands over the math and science, or whether he is truly attempting to make a case for the creation of new universes every time we commit to an action--whether it is something as simple as sitting down or remaining on our feet. Somewhere in the swiftly branching universes, Jeremy Bremen's wife didn't get brain cancer and die. Another, much older scientist who may be the only one who understands Jeremy's equations, gets the notion that he can find a universe that didn't experience the Holocaust of WWII, and where his family didn't die in the Ravensbruck concentration camp.

He kills himself.

"The Hollow Man" splits its chapters between Jeremy's hellish adventures after his wife dies, and flashbacks to happier days when she was alive and he was solving the mysteries of the universe. The poignancy is almost too difficult to bear, but Simmons is a good author and he makes you want to follow Jeremy to his quietus. Another character, a boy who was born blind, deaf, and mute and who is viciously abused by his mother and her live-in boyfriends, also narrates parts of the story. How Jeremy's universe and the universe of the handicapped boy overlap is the highlight and climax of "The Hollow Man."

I think this book does fall in the middle ground . . .

. . . despite the "love it or hate it" theme of the rest of the reviews on this page. I don't think this is a great book, but neither is it as bad as some of the other reviewers have posted. Bad one star books are the formulaic garbage cranked out by too many publishers these days. This isn't one of those. At least there are some thought provoking ideas in this book, and for me the best part was the romance between the telepathic married couple. Imagine the possibilities (and the difficulties). I think Simmons handled that part very well, while other parts didn't work for me. Such as the "look everybody, I did my research" mathematics formulae scattered throughout, which the average reader will not understand or care about. Doing the research is important, but I think it was overdone for this book. I would say that this is not a good place to start with Simmons, but for someone who has read his better books and wants more, there are much worse ways to spend an evening than reading this. Nobody hits a home run every time they step up to the plate.

The Hollow Man is Amazing!

After reading the other comments on this page I realise that this may not be everybody's idea of a fantastic novel. However, if you have enjoyed Simmons previously and/or you would like to read something truly original, try this. This novel certainly lives up to Dan Simmons reputation as being perhaps the most dynamic author of our, or any, time. This book, the story of Jeremy, who loses his way after the death of his wife only to, eventually, rediscover himself, his wife and the secret of life and death itself, is one of the strangest and most brilliant works of fiction in existence. I can only guess that the authors of the negative comments on this page must simply have failed the understand the massive scope of the journey that Simmons had led them on. Perhaps second only to Summer of Night, although I am yet to read Children of the Night or any of The Hyperion Cantos.

About the Author

Tami James Moore, Ph.D., CFLE, is an Professor of Family Studies at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. She received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, in 1995. She is a Certified Family Life Educator through the National Council on Family Relations. She has more than 20 years of post-secondary teaching experience and has taught the Family Resource Management course for the past 10 years.

Sylvia M. Asay, Ph.D., CFLE, is a Professor of Family Studies and Chair of the Family Studies and Interior Design Department at the University of Nebraska, Kearney. She received her Ph.D. in Community and Human Resources at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, in 1998 and received her Certified Family Life Educator credentials through the National Council on Family Relations. As a post-secondary educator, she has taught a wide range of courses including Marriage and Family Relationships, Cross-Cultural Family Patterns, Families in Crisis, and Family Resource Management. Her authored books include Strong Families Around the World: Strengths-Based Research and Practice (Haworth) and Family Resource Management (SAGE).

Good Condition

I ordered this textbook for a course I am taking over the summer. The book is in great condition, except for what looks like some water stains on the back cover. Nothing inside the book was damaged due to the water, so I am OK with that. The book also arrived very quickly.
