It explores developments in pertinent analytical technology and results of experimental studies on biological activity, toxicity, and tumorigenicity, including the inhibition of adverse biological activity of one specific tobacco smoke component by another tobacco smoke component.

Adding to the progress reported in the First Edition, the comprehensive Second Edition provides nearly 7,000 references on almost 9,600 components. The authors discuss the controversies over the extrapolation of the biological effect of a specific component administered individually by one route versus its biological effect when the component is in a highly complex mixture and is administered by a different route. They also cite studies in which cigarette design technologies were developed to control the per-cigarette mainstream smoke yield of Federal Trade Commission–defined tar and one or more specific tobacco smoke components of concern.

Gr. 3-6. From Father's Day to Diwali, Walpurgisnacht to World AIDS Day, Moehn has used a wide-angle lens to survey annual commemorations around the world. She introduces more than a hundred: some religious at base, some totally secular; some occasions for rejoicing, others mournful; some marking life stages or seasons, others designed to keep historical events fresh in the collective memory. The alphabetically arranged entries run from a half page to an entire spread and are illustrated mostly with small color photographs. They conclude with a particularly useful feature--a reference to similar holidays. Into general accounts of each holiday's origins and meanings, the author stirs generous quantities of specific information about characteristic practices and regional variations. She doesn't shy away from controversy, explaining, for instance, why Irish Protestants marching on Orange Day stay away from Catholic areas. Back matter includes descriptions of seven major calendars and a schedule of holidays, 2001-2005. Although this won't replace Henderson and Thompson's hefty Holidays, Festivals, and Celebrations of the World or similar books in the reference collection, this will be just the ticket for short reports--and for young researchers studying connections between human cultures. This book is great for teaching children about holidays of other nations. The descriptions are a very nice length, short enough to keep interest and long enough to give good detail. I do, however, wish the holidays were listed in chronological order and not alphabetical. It very difficult to find, for example, how and when other nations celebrate the new year.

excellent scholarship on a rather specialized topic

The thought that somebody could write a 300 page book only about Blue in Old English may strike some people as rather weird. In fact, the study of Colour terms in different languages is rather fascinating. Biggam an provides excellent reconstruction of the OE colour system and also disproves some myths about OE colour. Thus, although the book IS on a rather specialzed topic it can be recommended for those interested in colour and language.

A No Holds Barred book

Kyle has a way of getting behind what you've read in other books or from other teachers in a precise and concise way. I found that I had to re-read some of his main points because they are so thought-provoking and provocative. This short book is meant to be read more than once because in many ways it is counter-intuitive and deserves reflection.

"True Aloneness is Oneness"

A wonderful gift to any seeker-Kyle takes the reader behind the content of our minds and points at the unconditioned Self. He also makes a good case for and gives us the courage to embrace (Aloneness). The thing everyone is trying to avoid the most.

“Pain persists when you avoid feeling it. Pain dissolves when you face it ” This is not the usual conceptual, recycled spirituality. This book takes the reader directly into (What Is) and cuts through the noise and confusion of today’s spirituality.

Following Kyle directions, you can move towards oneness where there is no other.

If you are ready to break with the usual tired conceptual spirituality, I highly recommend, “There Are No Others”.

Extremely rare find

Tells the truth - more than extremely rare find. The few people that actually break thru usually don't try to be a help although some do if they can make enough money from it. Hard for most to accept without going thru it themselves and then struggle with how to reconcile with their loved ones for years. Kyle does make it almost accessible to those on the edge, and some hope to those who are trying to find their way in 'zombieland'. I don't think, unlike Bankei, that it is possible to achieve except through loss and suffering (like Bankei, Dostoevsky,the existentialists, the Buddha in all of us actually found..).
