Excellent beginning text on consultation-liaison psych

Excellent, non-intimidating introduction to psych liaison and consulting with med-surg patients. It is by no means exhaustive or detailed but it is not meant to be. Excellent for students and novices in this area.

Inaccurate

Very inaccurate with regard to ME (CFS). Though he correctly includes the disease in the Autoimmune and Endocrine Disorders chapter, he then goes on to conflate Idiopathic Chronic Fatigue and ME (Chronic Fatigue Sydrome), a rank amateur's mistake that results in his making inapposite recommendations. This may have been caused by a reliance on the Oxford, NICE or Reeves definitions which are invalid. The Canadian Government Definition is the only fully accurate official definition.

Despite CDC, NIH and the UK governments attempts to retard the science, there are now over 4,000 articles in peer reviewed medical journals showing frank biological pathology in ME. ME causes an enormous amount of morbidity and suffering. The propagation of the falsehood the ME is Idiopathic Chronic Fatigue contributes to a huge amount of iatrogenic morbidity (and sometimes mortality) for the over one million Americans with this very disabling disease.

Anyone can publish on Amazon - this is proof.

This really isn't a book at all. it's more like a pamphlet or a guide. It's rife with spelling and grammatical errors. The author doesn't care enough to proof-read (just read it out loud to yourself and you'll easy find all the errors.) I'd say there was a spelling or grammatical error every other page. Given that there are so few pages, it really shows how much the author cares. Probably one of the least helpful books I've had to interpret (because of all the spelling and grammatical errors, it was a bit challenging deciphering what the author was attempting to communicate.) The minimum price Amazon will sell a text is .99. That's what this should be selling for and, even then, it's too much for too little. Sorry. I wanted to like it. Be aware this is only a few pages in length. Caveat Emptor. Anyone can publish on Amazon - this is proof.

Michael McDowell (1950-1999) is best known for his screenplays to the films Beetlejuice and The Nightmare Before Christmas, but he was also the author of several excellent and underrated Southern Gothic horror novels, of which The Amulet (1979) was the first. Originally published as a pulp paperback, now scarce and long out-of-print, McDowell’s grimly humorous and delightfully horrific novel returns to print in this edition, which features a new introduction by Poppy Z. Brite.

The first novel of Michael McDowell; unsung American author.

"The Amulet", first published in 1979, was Michael McDowell's first paperback original. It set the pace for what was to be a marvelous career, including several other novels, such as "Cold Moon Over Babylon", "The Elementals", "Katie", "Gilded Needles" and the successful serial novel "Blackwater", to which Stephen King gives credit as his main inspiration for the "Green Mile" series.
Also, as a footnote, Michael McDowell was the creator of the screenplay and characters of the hugely successful "Beetlejuice" movie.
Set in the summer of 1965, at the dawn of the Vietnam war, this is the haunting story of a sleepy southern town called Pine Cone, and what went on there... After her husband is the casualty of a bizarre accident, young Sarah Howell slowly comes to realize that her strange, treacherous mother-in-law, is somehow behind an infernal plan of revenge.
Slowly, as a pendant in a gold chain passes from hand to hand, citizens of the town begin to die in horrid, violent ways. What is behind this? What leads a loving mother to set her children and home on fire? A dutiful policeman to turn against his wife? A friend against the other?... as the body count rises, Sarah must run against time to stop the accursed amulet... but slowly it seems to be finding her way to her.
Michael McDowell passed away on December 27, 1999. He was a lecturer at Tufts college, a Harvard Graduate and a Brandeis Ph.D... He will be sorely missed on account of his books, wickedly funny, consistently written and beautifully plotted. His characters stay with the reader even long after finishing the book. It's too bad he has been overlooked by many a horror and literature fan, for this si the real stuff... Horror as Modern Literature.

Micheal McDowell introduced me into the world of horror! You see one side of the house was reading the GoodBook everyday and the other side of the house had stacks and stacks of paperback novels of horror. So, I snuck the book out of my mother's extensive collection and was thrown into a completely different realm. In 1979, this was the first horror book I ever read and I was 14 yrs old. I couldn't put it down then and I can't now, often sometimes comparing his great writing to the new horror authors out there now......

The moment I started reading I was hooked. His writing flowed seamlessly and he was always capable of placing you right into the story itself. You got lost in his world! Every character in this book ends up being connected through an evil, cursed, "chain" of events. It eventually comes full circle in this small town, to it's original owner. A wicked mother out for vengeance for her son............

Needless to say I own all of Micheal McDowell's books and have read them all. All his books were excellent, but my favorite's will always be this one and "The Elementals".......

Sadly, this great author and screenwriter passed away in 1999. I feel he never got a chance to fully achieve the status that other great masters of horror writing did! I have a good friend that's trying to break into horror world, so I found an excellent copy on Amazon, he is 26 yrs and wanted to read the classics. It's very hard to find a copy of any of his books and it takes a lot of searching!! All this author's books are out of print, they are priceless!!!!!

Couldn't stop reading it.

I loved the book. I read so much about Michael McDowell from other reviews and I figured I'd give him a go, and he sure doesn't disappoint. The Amulet was relatively short only 340 pages, but it read as if it had so much more vastness. The story of a cursed Amulet that makes its way to person to unrelated person and they in turn kill those around them, sounds hokey, but McDowell makes it plausible with great set ups and back grounds of the characters. The story moves along at a great pace never boring and never slow it is just right, almost as if every sentence and chapter were worded with great skill and construction. The chapters were short concise, and to the point, which made reading that much more enjoyable. Why this story was never made into a great film is beyond me, since it was so compelling a story. As one set of people died and the Amulet moved on, I couldn't wait to see what will happen next, and how their method of death will be explained. Michael McDowell has a very good way of detailing the deaths and he really surprises us by not pulling any punches by killing people that many would say was unexpected, but it works. I first heard of this writer, after I read Duma Key by Stephen King. Someone is a review said that Duma Key was similar to a novel by McDowell called The Elementals, but only that much better. I later learned that Stephen King admired McDowell's work. King's Wife Tabitha even finished McDowell's last novel after his untimely death. With that said i figured he must be a good writer. I went out and purchased all of his known novels, I have Cold Moon over Babylon, The Elementals and The Black Water series complete, so I am really eager to get to his next story, I am glad I can keep such a great writer's memory alive.

Great text. It got me through my University of Florida International Relations class without a hitch. I would definitely recommend to anyone interested in the topic. Very thorough however you can tell it is slightly biased as it is written from a constructivist point of view. That being said, it still does a very good job of of describing different theoretical perspectives.

About the Author

Claude Maley is Managing Director of Mit Consultants, a consultancy and education practice servicing international clients in management of change, and chairman of a business solutions company. He started his career as a systems engineer with IBM, after reading estate management and building construction at the London School of Building, and has held various management positions for international organizations and companies.

His functional management and consulting experience with major corporations such as ABB, Alcatel, Areva, BP, Cadbury-Schweppes, Cartier, Caterpillar, Cisco, Ericsson, GE, Hewlett-Packard, IMS International, Motorola, Organon, Overseas Containers Limited, Pechiney, Renault Automobile, and Siemens, to name but a few, has spanned more than forty years in engineering, production and manufacturing, distribution, transportation, and marketing services sectors. This has exposed him to a variety of situations, which have all forged a deep understanding of the issues governing the management of change by projects.

In a professional career spanning forty years, Claude has held responsibility for a significant number of projects. These have involved internal organizational projects, and external commercial projects, ranging in duration from one month to five years, and in budget from $50,000 to $500 million. Claude has also participated in many projects as team leader of subsystems, and he has served on numerous occasions as an external advisor to lead project managers.

Claude is a PMP and professional speaker, instructor, and lecturer in topics ranging from general organizational, program and project management to sales and marketing, leadership, and motivation. In the practice of his consulting and education profession he has worked with more than eighty different nationalities in more than sixty nations in all continents. Claude is fluent in English, French, Spanish, and Italian.

Claude is author of educational courses and papers on business solutions, management of change by projects, organizational management and leadership, and is a member of the International Project Management Association and the Project Management Institute.
