A funny, moving glimpse into Appalachia in the 1940s and 50s, A Hillbilly Grows Up tells not only the story of one young boy and his family, but describes the social fabric that held small towns together across a region riddled with deprivation and scarcity. About the Author

Darrel Campbell studied at Berea College in Kentucky for two years before graduating from the University of Cincinnati with a BS in chemistry and attending the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania. Campbell retains US patents, published many articles in trade publications, and was profiled in an issue of Chemical Week. During his career, Campbell held positions in three multibillion-dollar international companies. He has traveled globally, even living in South America for two years. He currently lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife of over fifty years.

Cindy Campbell Krause attended Northwestern University and graduated with a degree in psychology. She went on to earn a graduate degree in marketing from Loyola University of Chicago and work in purchasing around Chicago and Milwaukee. Married for over twenty years, she has two kids and lives near Detroit, Michigan. She plans to move to the Cleveland, Ohio, area soon.

The seven 'essays' by J.R.R. Tolkien assembled in this new paperback edition were with one exception delivered as general lectures on particular occasions; and while they mostly arose out of Tolkien's work in medieval literature, they are accessible to all. Also included in this volume is the lecture English and Welsh; the Valedictory Address to the University of Oxford in 1959; and a paper on Invented Languages delivered in 1931, with exemplification from poems in the Elvish tongues. Most famous of all is On Fairy-Stories, a discussion of the nature of fairy-tales and fantasy, which gives insight into Tolkien's approach to the whole genre. The pieces in this collection cover a period of nearly thirty years, beginning six years before the publication of The Hobbit, with a unique 'academic' lecture on his invention (calling it A Secret Vice) and concluding with his farewell to professorship, five years after the publication of The Lord of the Rings.

Tolkien without hobbits

I recently bought and read Tolkien's translation of Beowulf, and found Tolkien's notes to the text wonderfully illuminating. When I saw this volume on offer, I really wanted to see what more he had to say... and was not in the least disappointed. The lectures/essays presented in this volume are centered on medieval literature (Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight), but in one case deals with "invented" languages and in another with fairy stories. I'm not a specialist on any of these topics, but I found the essays approachable, informative -- and thoroughly enjoyable.

For the scholar or the Tolkien fan

This book has the essay that is the reason why we still read Beowulf, namely, Beowulf: The Monsters and Critics. That Old English poem was largely ignored by anyone other than specialists in the language until Tolkien explained to the world the wonders to be found therein. We who work with classic literature know this, but here's a chance for the fan who knows this author only through The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings to get to know the man as a scholar and to see the source for much of his famous works. Several other essays in this book give Tolkien's views on fantasy stories, showing his understanding of the genre and the foundation of his creative thinking.

At times, Tolkien expressed regret that he had become famous as a novelist rather than a scholar of language and culture--but these essays reveal that "Lord of the Rings" and his Anglo-Saxon Dictionary were two products of the same mental universe... and what a dazzling place it was.

There is a corny Aladdin dramatization at the onset of the program, and one of the authors indulges in some overacting, but this fits with the program's inspirational tone. I loved the section about relationships as it is more often ...

Even though I'm kind of biased on the author's work from reading Chicken Noodle Soup for the Soul in many of its incarnations this little book was different.I found it was more of a sectional stand-alone on just about any category you want to find the motivation to passionately ask about. I loved the section about relationships as it is more often than not a sore point for men like myself who try to find the"right" words in a personal situation.There are other areas I also plan to read and incorporate in the language of everyday life.if you want a "hokey" tome about meaning or a get rich quick fix steer away.If you want honest insight put it in your Amazon cart now!

Ask and Ye Shall Receive...

The writing and the approach in the book are not earth shattering. In fact, I wish there was a little more meat or pizzaz in the content. So, why the recommendation? Simple - the content at its core is incredibly powerful - and we all need the reminder. Our gentieel approach to communications and emotional interaction has left us forgetting to ASK for things. We expect the world to be mind readers, and get upset, frustrated or depressed when we don't get what we want. Of course, since we never actually ASKED for what we wanted, we rely on guesswork and luck to achieve our dreams and goals.

The genie in the lamp could grant wishes, but those wishes needed to be spoken by Aladdin. Similarly, we are all in a position to achieve our goals and dreams, but they must be spoken. Even within ourselves, we cannot harness our own power of desire and subconscious until we solidify the desire by asking for it.

An absolute must read - even if the writing style is a bit flat - the content is NOT.

If your looking for new information about the law of attraction or new information anywhere in or around that subject, you will not find it in this book. The book just has a lot of basic information about the law of attraction, nothing you can't find for free on the internet. I wanted to like this book, but it was the same information I had read and heard so many other places.
