Angie is fat. And miserable. And she has her reasons. Her sister, a star basketball player turned soldier, has been captured in Afghanistan. Everyone thinks she’s dead. Angie’s lawyer mother busies herself with work. Her adopted Korean brother busies himself being obnoxious. And Angie goes around wearing her sister’s too-small b-ball T-shirt, trying to stay out of the mean girls’ way. At one point, she tries to slit her wrists and comes out bleeding onto the basketball court. Then KC comes to town. Cool and cute, she makes a beeline for Angie and no one can figure out why (including the reader). But as the world turns, so do the pages, and Angie decides maybe she can play varsity basketball like her sister, and maybe she can have a “gay-girl-gay” relationship with KC—although KC’s cutting gets in the way. Some of the characters don’t push much beyond stereotype, but Angie’s anguish and the dysfunction of her family seem quite real. As the story spins toward its conclusion, elements may seem preordained, but the emotion with which they’re infused gives them new life. Grades 9-12. --Ilene Cooper

Fat Angie: required reading

I believe that Fat Angie should be required reading for all who work with teens, and for teens too. It captures the heart of being different in high school, both the heart ache that it brings as well as the triumph of overcoming that adversity. If even one person can see you for what you really are, it frees you to see yourself that way too, and that is the first step to acceptance. This is a beautiful story, and a significant book. It will stand the test of time. I know because I am 59 years old and it spoke to the me that survived the nightmare of high school with the help of friends. I understand Fat Angie; I lived her pain. To see a book that does not dwell on self pity but rather focuses on the joy of never giving up and not giving in, to see that nonconformity is not a sin and should not feel the need to be forgiven, is wonderful. I highly recommend this book. It's stunning. My deepest gratitude to the author for planting this beacon of hope to all of us who work with kids and want so very deeply for them to survive intact and unique, as beautiful as we know they can be.

raw, funny and some (kc) romance

When I started reading "fat angie" it took me a few pages to find narrator's voice, but once I did, I didn't put the book down until I finished it. This is a story about pain and suffering that comes from bullying, but to just call it a book about bullying would be selling it short. The parts about the bullying are harsh, raw and hard, somehow though I felt the cold distanced contempt of Angie's mom, the most painful.
It's a story about people showing up, the coach an unexpected friend and of course romance.
in Fat Angie the romance part comes from KC Romance, the new girl in town. The fact that is a "gay-girl gay", as both girls call it, romance adds a little extra dimension to the book, but it's more about the emerging romance, that first doubt, that first kiss and it just happens to be two girls that fall in love.
Fat Angie is about of doubts, about love, about coming of age. Fat Angie is struggling with who you are, who you want to be, about finding perfection in imperfection. Fat Angie is about bravery and fear and I loved it.

Simply Wonderful

Fat Angie is so much more than a book about bullying. It's more than a book about loss. And it's more than a book about self-discovery. It's a cautionary tale about what happens to the people left behind in war and an illustration of the disconnect that occurs in families suffering through intense grief.

The subject matter is raw at times, the approach unblinking, but there's an undercurrent of hope in the face of daunting situations and against sizeable odds that makes Fat Angie a joy to read.

And in case this review sounds too dark, let me add (without spoilers) that there are Hoosier-type moments and a quirky version of happily ever after, too:-)

About the Author

 

David W. Allen is the GIS manager for the City of Euless, Texas. He has taught at Tarrant County College since 1999, where he helped found one of the first GIS degree programs in Texas and establish a state standard for GIS degree programs. He is the author of GIS Tutorial 2: Spatial Analysis Workbook (Esri Press, 2010) and Getting to Know ArcGIS ModelBuilder (Esri Press, 2011).

Jeffery M. Coffey, GISP, is currently the GIS manager for the Tarrant Regional Water District in Fort Worth, Texas, where he manages large GIS implementation, analysis, and integration projects. Coffey taught GIS classes at the University of North Texas and University of Texas at Arlington and helped establish an accredited GIS program at Tarrant County College where he currently teaches and serves on the GIS program's advisory board.

Could benefit from an answer key

Although I've only just started working through this book, I'd like to make a couple of observations ...
I used the 2nd book in this series by the same author and though it was very good. Overall, this book also presents well, but I've noticed a few things about it that prospective buyers might want to consider. My biggest issue so far is that some of suggested exercises can be a little vague, in my opinion. For example, Section 1-1 presents a very detailed example of a sample geodatabase design. Then, in Exercise 1-1, they instruct you to design a second geodatabase based on a very brief set of instructions. I appreciate that the author is trying to get readers to think on their own, but if you're trying to work through this book independently (without benefit of an instructor or an answer key), you really have no way of knowing whether or not you've completed the task correctly. This wouldn't be so bad except for the fact that the Exercises in subsequent chapters build off of the earlier exercises. So if you do something wrong initially, you'll have to go back and start over - a very tedious process given the technical nature of the material. I think this method is very effective in a classroom setting, but has some shortcomings for people who are studying on their own.
In general, though, a great series of books that have taught me a lot.

Great Geodatabase Tutorial

Geodatabases are something I’ve frequently encountered in my GIS work, but prior to working through this book I had little experience with them. I didn’t understand their purpose or why using one was better than working with individual shapefiles, and for whatever reason even my GIS classes in grad school didn’t emphasize them. The Getting to Know ArcGIS Desktop book for version 9.3 was very useful in my introductory GIS course, so I went looking for something similar that dealt with more “advanced” topics.

Well lo and behold, ESRI Press came out with just such a book back in 2011 for the release of version 10. GIS Tutorial 3 deals almost exclusively with geodatabases, and it uses the same step-by-step format that I originally learned the basics with. I won’t go into details about what’s covered – Amazon lets you view the table of contents and whatnot for free – but some of what I learned here I was able to immediately apply at work. It turns out I actually enjoy importing feature classes into geodatabases and lining up fields…hmmm…

For the most part the tutorials and exercises work out as intended, and the review questions at the end of each exercise are pertinent and thoughtful. The only issues I have with the book are minor. Chapter 6 begins with how to customize a toolbar, which is something that would make more sense at the beginning of the book (assuming it’s included at all). That’s followed in section 6-2 by a Python script tutorial, but don’t expect to learn scripting from it. There are entire books on scripting, so if you want to learn it check one of those out (not to mention I couldn’t get Exercise 6-2 to work). Given that Chapter 5 covers geodatabase topology and 7 covers ModelBuilder, 6 feels like a random afterthought. I noticed very few typos in the book; the only memorable one is on page 245 which seems to be missing a line or two in its third paragraph, which begins mid-sentence.

If you’re looking for something to advance your GIS skills, I highly recommend this book. I’ve been able to apply what I’ve learned at work, and the book’s ease of use and layout make it worthwhile both as a learning tool and reference. Partway through the book I switched to using ArcGIS 10.1 and was still able to work through the tutorials without a problem (the legend options have changed however), so you don’t need to worry about buying something out of date if you’re using a later version of the software.

Love love love these books. 1 & 2 were textbooks for me at college, but the way they are written made 3 easily useable without an instructor. And it's good to have the trial software back on my laptop!!!

This ritual also offers layers of meaning for an earnest pilgrim. The authors attempt successsfully to trace the origin and development of the theology and practice of such pilgrimages in the different world religions like Judaism, Islam, Christianity and Hinduism. A separate chapter is devoted most appropriately, to the Indian religions. A student would find the book very valuable and a pilgrim would be fascinated by the information. The book is illustrated with beautiful photographs from various parts of the world.

The authors argue that when the national government loosened its controls on industry and services, state governments began shaping the fortunes of their citizens through state-level policy reforms, resulting in faster growth in every state over the last decade than any other decade in the post-independence era. In fact, some of the poorest states, notably Bihar and Odisha, have been growing the fastest.

Professors Panagariya and Chakraborty and Dr. Rao refute the common assumptions that growth has not occurred or that poverty has not been reduced in all Indian states. The recent reforms have also led to improved access in every state to basic amenities such as permanent houses, electricity, water, and sanitation. These accomplishments notwithstanding, regional inequality on a per capita basis has grown as well. The authors analyze the economic transformation that has taken place in the largest eighteen states of India and suggest reforms in areas of agriculture, industry, services and urbanization that can further accelerate this transformation. They also provide a comprehensive analysis of education and health in the states.

About the Author

Arvind Panagariya is a Professor of Economics and Indian Political Economy at Columbia University, Non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, and a former Chief Economist of the Asian Development Bank. Panagariya has written prolifically on global trade policy issues and economic reforms in India. The author of a dozen books, he has also published technical papers in many leading journals and other publications. Professor Panagariya writes an influential monthly column in the Times of India and has been honored with the Padma Bhushan by India.

Pinaki Chakraborty is Economic Adviser to the Fourteenth Finance Commission of India. He is also Professor at National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, New Delhi. He served as Fellow, Senior Economist, and Economist at NIPFP, New Delhi and as Associate Professor at the Centre for Development Studies. His research areas are macroeconomics and public finance, tax policy and reforms, and federalism and intergovernmental fiscal issues. He has published his research papers in both national and international journals.

Dr. M. Govinda Rao is a well known scholar in public finance in India. Presently, he is a Member of the Fourteenth Finance Commission, Government of India. His past positions include Director of the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy in New Delhi and Director of the Institute for Social and Economic Change in Bangalore. Dr. Rao was also a Member of Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India. He has chaired and was a member of several committees. He has written extensive publications in referred journals in addition to his 14 books and monographs.

What A Rush!

This book starts off with our heroine from the first two books, Jade, reeling from the revelation at the end of the second book. While fleeing from the madman still trying to torment her, she gets another note from him: "You took something from me, now I'm going to take something from you". Instantly in panic mode, she reveals her secret to her human best friend in order to try to protect her. The tension never really lets up, and as has become Ms. Carrero's style, the last 2 pages reveal a major bomb that yet again sends Jade reeling. For more on that, I guess we'll have to wait for Ms. Carrero to write book 4!

Go ahead and pick up book 1 (Evolution) before reading this one, as this particular series you really have to read in order to understand even half of what is going on. I can tell you from both my own experience and my wife's that once you read Evolution, you'll be hooked on this series!

The Next Step

With a title like that you can expect great treachery to not only the mind, but the heart. It makes you wonder about whom you can really trust and who you can't. This book is the third in the Evolution series and it ends with another cliffhanger. People with advanced brain functions are rumored to exist and lives like the ones in this series could be close to the truth. Read this sci-fi/suspense story of young lovers as they search for the truth to their advanced existence. I eagerly await the fourth. The books are short but sweet.

Good easy read

I loved this installment in the evolution series. The writing is simple, although the author is from Australia so the vernacular is a bit different(something I liked). This was a great read for me during my nursing classes, the story is not complicated it is easy to follow all the characters(there are several). Carrero times the action and lulls in action perfectly. I loved the twist at the end and I can't wait to read the last book.

About the Author
Colin Yates is a J2EE principal architect who specializes in web-based development. He has been a freelance consultant for the past three years and has worked in a number of environments, both structured and chaotic. Since graduating with a software engineering degree in 1997, he has held a number of positions, including development lead, principal systems engineer, mentor, and professional trainer. His principal skill set includes mentoring others, architecting complex problems into manageable solutions, and optimizing development processes. Colin was first introduced to the Spring Framework in January 2003 by his mentors, Peter Den Haan and David Hewitt, and he has never looked back. After a couple of years using the Spring and Hibernate technology stack to good effect, in May 2005 he became one of the early adopters of Spring Web Flow, finally finding the missing item in the web development toolbox. A self-confessed addict of the green bar that comes from following test-driven development and XP, Colin regularly frustrates new team members by introducing a continuous build environment. When not hanging around the Spring support forums (http://forum.springframework.org), Colin can be found out walking with his wife and two dogs, practicing martial arts, attending his local church, or preparing for the arrival of his first child.

Bad for Beginners

This book is not for beginners to MVC programming. Alot of the code does not work without you tinkering around with it and using previous knowledge to get it to work. Concepts are not well explained and working examples are not always provided. Unfortunately there are no other great Spring MVC books out there right now. I'm a seasoned professional and I had alot of trouble comprehending what they were trying to say, and that's after i've been using Spring MVC for 2 months at work and having spent 5 years with JSF and Spring. I would really like someone to release a Beginners Spring MVC book.

Not As Good As Expected

I was excited about this book but unfortunately it is not very good. It barely scratches the surface with Spring MVC and focuses on a very general example. The chapters for Spring MVC are not very informative and provide almost no code samples. The Spring guide provides better information. This book does an okay job covering Web Flow but still expected more. If you are looking for a great book for Spring I would recommend Spring Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach Second Edition.

Way Too Difficult to Get Through

It seems like the authors set out to create the most rigorous and complete reference for Spring MVC, and in doing so, created something just is neither helpful nor enjoyable for someone who wants to ease into a new framework. I also purchased the VirtualPairProgrammers Spring MVC video series, and it was much more helpful at my level. Kudos to these guys for being so detailed and rigorous, but they went overboard.
