A complete book of Norse Myths. I have not started reading it yet, but in glancing at it I love how it's done. There are a handful of pictures, and most are just thumbnails at the start of the telling of the myths. It seems very complete and informative.

Superb myths superbly retold

This is probably the best introduction to the Norse myths for the general, adult reader. The retelling is lively, engaging and immensely entertaining.
The author's introduction is excellent in assisting the non-scholar reader to get their bearings. The text of the myths is left clean and uncluttered with foot notes. Following the myths is a section of commentary on each of them. This is the books weakest point, the commentary seems unaccountably flat, lacking in depth and breadth. The author includes an invaluable glossary to help the reader keep track of who is who and what is what. The author includes a useful bibliography for those who wish to deep deeper into the subject.
Again, this is the book I would recommend to anyone interested in exploring the nine worlds. It is most unfortunately that the norse myths are not as well known as the Greek myths.

Jeffrey Perloff was trained as an economist at the University of Chicago and at MIT. He taught microeconomics at MIT and the Wharton School of Business before moving to the University of California, Berkeley, where he teaches today. Can an economics book be funny? Yes, it can!

Purchased for an intermediate micro class. Not only is the material explained well with real-life examples, but you get the added plus of the author's dry sense of humor in the content and as footnotes! Having the answers to many of the problems in the back is great for review. Recommended!

Gigantic book, but not that great

I am using this book for college intermediate micro and I have to say that it really hasn't helped one bit. Economics is best understood when presented with numerous examples and this book contains very few. For the price, don't buy. I don't even use mine anymore and just look up whatever is confusing. I suggest anyone else to do the same.

Well written, quirky and relevant!

It's well written and informative, but it handles more like a mathematics textbook than an economics survey. That is understandable considering the heavy emphasis on Calculus concepts. Nonetheless, the author is quirky and personable. If you like professor humor, good quotes, and relevant examples, this is the book for you and your class!

A thought provoking and engaging book

I read this book knowing nothing about its authors; after reading it I have subscribed to James Dale Davidson's financial newsletter! In a world that appears to have gone mad with fear and self-doubt, Davidson and Rees-Mogg provide a grand theory that explains why the world is the way it is in general. What they call "megapolitics" helps to explain how technological innovation drives not only the economy but also international relations. This book challenged my understanding of the internet by showing how advanced telecommunications changes the fundamental relation between the individual and the state. Even if you do not agree with Davidson and Rees-Mogg's theory, the bibliography of this book is so well researched that it alone justifies the purchase. I enjoyed the book so much that I purchased a copy for my family to read. A "must read" hardly does this book justice.

Cyberpunk future

This is a very interesting book with disturbing implications: the authors contend that, in our lifetimes we will see the messy demise of nation states, with the most advanced of the Western democracies falling the farthest and hardest. The grim future they depict is essentially that of Stephenson's "Snow Crash" or Gibson's "Neuromancer".

In making their case, the authors draw an interesting and convincing parallel between today's concepts of patriotism and national duty, and the Church in late medieval Europe.

I'd fault the book for its hyped up rhetoric and excessive repetition of the same historical factoids. Also, the dire predictions of this 1997 book are somewhat undermined by the predictions of the scope of the Y2K computer failures, and also by the odd depiction of Peruvian ex-dictator Fujimori as the wave of the future.

I've read all of the books by Davidson and Rees-Mogg, and was pleasantly surprised by their latest effort. The thing that's particularly inspiring about this book is the opportunity to consider futures that are not promoted by typical pundits and "experts." It's refreshing to be able to not only have an alternate view, but also to be able to review the research that has gone into the analysis, which enables one to see how the model being presented was developed. Even if reality does not show up exactly as presented, it's certainly thought-provoking.

However, as important as she is to our history and to the drama, the play is not just about Phillis. The play is also about the men in that room and the test that they were facing. The test of overcoming their own prejudices to be willing to put their signature on a document attesting that this African household slave of John and Susannah Wheatley had written a number of poems compiled in a small manuscript. A Negro slave author was a phenomenon that was unique to these men, to Boston, and to a young America. Only if the largely older and all white men in that room were willing to put their names to this attestation would this manuscript have a chance of being published. The consequences of this action for these men were possible ridicule, and the threat of physical violence from an external force, the Boston gang, under the leadership of Ebenezer Mackintosh, street brawler and charismatic leader of the South End Gang. The final verdict would change American History.

New View on Life

I am 21 years old, and I was never a reader. All throughout high school I refused to read books for pleasure, I even refused to read the mandatory reading assignments. Also, I never made it past my first semester of college. However, I recently picked this book up out of curiosity. This book has totally changed my view on literature and value of education. Instead of coming home after work and sitting down and watching movie after movie, my new desire is to read a good book. Thankfully, "The Trial of Phillis Wheatley", has turned that routine around for me. Now, I want to read more often than watch television, I now want to read more to further my knowledge on subjects like history. I recommend this book to everyone, readers or not. Thank You Ronald Wheatley for this beautiful piece of art.

Must read historical book

The story of Phyllis Wheatley is presented by the author in a theatrical manner that made me feel as though I was actually present when Phyllis was challenged to prove the authorship of her poems because of her race. I became totally immersed in the issues of the times experiencing the tension of blacks verses whites, England verses America and the Colonial debates over British rule, abolition and taxation. Remarkably the Wheatley family did not treat Phyllis as a slave rather, they recognized and nurtured her talent and provided unprecedented education in literature. Without their generosity of spirit and the support of one of our Founding Fathers, John Hancock, America would not have been gifted with talents of our country’s first published black poet. I heartily recommend this book. The story was riveting, the writing artful, and the reader was left desiring more. Thank you for writing this wonderful book!

An Amazing Woman

Ronald Wheatley takes readers back before the American Revolution to introduce us to a young woman slave, who is both genius and poet. I had not heard of her and was so pleased to read about the first published African American woman poet. Through his characters, Wheatley's book expresses both British as well as American viewpoints and his writing reveals the delicate, worried emotions of the soft spoken slave. The author gives lots of data about those turbulent times before the play begins.

Amazing !!

First time reader here for Tracie but she has me hooked !!!! I read this on a road trip and was so engrossed in it the trip went by so quick !!! Now I was torn on liking the main characters because of the controversal student teacher relationship but that lasted like 5 mins then it became a side note I was so interested in their backgrounds and how they were all woven together. I was so happy I choose to start this series you will not be disappointed the next books in the series pick up where this story stops. Tara and Derek Loved them !!! I cant wait to see where things go with Hanna. Take a chance I know you wont regret it!!!!! I cant wait to meet this author this fall at Indie Bookfest!!!! if your in orlando this fall check it out !!!

Fast-moving and direct...

Just finished this book, and was very pleasantly surprised! This story was very fast-paced, the reader was able to dive right in from the get-go. The characters were very vividly written, giving you a clear view of each person. The writer switched between the perspectives of the two main characters, and it was very interesting to see how each one was processing various events, and what was going through their minds. The ending was somewhat more abrupt than what I expected it to be, but it just made me want to read the next book to see how things fleshed out and see what happened with all characters involved! Bring on Blur!!! :)

Hooked from the first page!!

This book was a wonderful read!!! After the first three paragraphs I was hooked. I felt as though I was right there with Tara and couldn't put the book down. The story line was easy to follow with plenty of action. She masterfully crafted a believable relationship centered around a perfect blend of everyday life and fiction. I am a fan of sci-fi / paranormal romance books and I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series and can't wait for the next book.

P.S. - I would love to see more about Tara's link to the paranormal through her grandmother...

My Kindle version does not have page numbers!

This is a great textbook, author has a nice writing style. But, I only uses location numbers, hard to follow when the professor uses a page number for reference!!! Most textbooks you download have both page and location numbers these days. I would not recommend purchasing Kindle version for class until they upgrade to page numbers.

Worked well for my nursing class

The book had well organized material and worked perfectly for my nursing research class. The content helped me to write my own research paper with a proposed study for future research. Some definitions were a little vague, but I just used the internet to fill in the blanks.

Kindle Version does not have page numbers!!!

BEWARE!!!! The Kindle version of this book has NO PAGE NUMBERS. I sure wish they would have told me that before I purchased it for my kindle. It's an epic mess to try to find a specific mess. The kindle version is not worth the time, money or frustration.
