Enthusiastic Guide to Intelligent Judaism

Unlike many "guide to Judaism" books, Boteach doesn't mince words and he doesn't oversimplify.
Despite this, he manages to clarify and elucidate many key Jewish concepts and introduce new ideas that should make any "intelligent person" sit up and listen; ideas that few Orthodox rabbis are espousing these days, like seriously getting to know people of other religions and learning about their beliefs.
What this book lacks in organization and consistency among the various chapters' subject matter, it makes up for in enthusiasm. Boteach's feeling for Judaism runs deep, and it shows. If you're enthusiastic about Judaism, too, grab a copy of this book and dig in.

Interesting but not convincing

I was born into a Jewish family but became an atheist a few years ago. While Boteach is an intelligent and passionate writer, he failed to convince me my decision was wrong. He wrestles with the classic question of theodicy-how a just God can allow suffering- but does not resolve it. Despite this, I still recommend the book to anyone curious about Judaism. He explains it well; he just doesn't justify it.

I enjoyed the book throughly, but some of the arguments presented could have been more convincing and better researched. It seemes as if Shmuelly took bits and pieces of his other books and put them together as a "best of" compendium.

My Suggestion: Rewrite it, it really has potential.

Great overview of Combined Cycle for the layman

This was a great book for a layperson such as myself in understanding combined cycle powerplants. It explains the economic reasons why these power plants are more efficient, and goes into detail on each of the major engineered equipment pieces of this plant, and how they relate to one another. Explains things well in parts where the book is technical. Highly recommended for a layperson.

Good overview of the combined cycle process

This book is a good overview of the combined cycle process. It saves the equations for the end of the book and spends most of the text discussing concepts. The case studies at the end of the book are particularly interesting. The section on Integrated Gasification and Combined Cycle was useful because it discussed differences in design theory for each of the major manufacturers. Unfortunately the previous chapters did not spend as much time discussing differences in manufacturer designs.

I investigated the history and principles of the literary tradition with no less care than the development of the thematic tradition. The study of the history of the traditional themes is bound up with the study of the sources... in my opinion the sources are very different from the documents J (Jahwist), E (Elohist), P (Priestly Code), postulated by the commonly-held theory. I made every effort to note accurately all the linguistic details of the text, its grammatical niceties, its allusions, even its play upon words. It was not my object to defend any particular viewpoint or any particular exegetical method, but only to arrive at a thorough understanding of the Torah's meaning, whatever that might be.

Do yourself a favor and purchase this book.

If I had to use one word to describe this commentary I would choose, "meaty". There is a lot of information in this text. I believe that anyone who wants to understand the book of Genesis should have this book. I can't believe that as a Christian I had never heard of Rabbi Cassuto but I can understand why.

In my humble opinion, I would say that any library is without any of Rabbi Cassuto books is incomplete. It is a must have Commentary for the book of Genesis. I would also say that you may want to read his "The Documentary Hypothesis" book as he refers to it frequently in this book.

Also his commentary is unlike any Christian commentary that I personally have read. Do yourself a favor and purchase this book.

This commentary is very detailed and sometimes difficult to keep up with, but it does not compromise, and very clearly defends the literal translation of the most important section of the Bible. Perfect for Christians seeking truth!
