Made in Hungary: A Life Forged by History, by Maria Krenz

Made in Hungary is a remarkable memoir of resilience. Born in a bombing raid in 1944, Maria Krenz's childhood in Budapest traversed the tumultuous years from the Holocaust through the Soviet occupation to the year following the Hungarian Revolution, when she and her mother fled to Venezuela. It was a young life filled with uncertainty and contradiction amid the swirl of history. Raised Catholic by her Jewish parents, under Communism she lived every lonely day with the fear that it was dangerous to be either. After her father's death in 1950, she lived with her traumatized mother and was mostly left to fend for herself. She survived with her fierce spirit intact, and over time, grew hungry to understand the larger historical context of her early years. This book is the result, a poignant personal and family story steeped in history.

a life less ordinary
By Helen Braider
This is a memorable and moving memoir. The author was born during a bombing raid over Budapest in 1944, and begins by piecing together the story of how her family, who were Jews, survived cold, hunger, and random violence as well as the Nazi occupiers until the Red Army arrived. The author then describes life in post-war Communist Hungary and the new terrors, humiliations, and hardships that would eventually lead her and her mother to emigrate to the West. Since the author was a little girl at the time, her memoir has a wonderfully layered quality in which her experience as a child is subtly juxtaposed with what she later came to understand about why the things she knew, but did not understand, were the way they were. The book is full of vivid pictures of daily life in Budapest--of the struggle for security and, often, for food; of the growing fear and gloom as Hungarian society became ever more rigidly constrained by its Communist government; of school life and the streets, parks, and gardens through which the author wandered. It is also full of beautiful portraits of family and friends: the gentle, old-world father who could never quite understand why his Hungarian compatriots refused to acknowledge him as one of them; the dashingly defiant older sister who eventually escaped to West Germany on a motorcycle; the other sister who managed to pursue a fascinatingly exotic life as an artist even through the grim and colorless years of the early Communist era; the heart-broken mother who never succeeded in recovering from the sufferings the family endured. What I liked best, though, was the sense of Krenz's fearless attention and intelligence even as a child--that, and the unfailing goodness and love that pervades every page. I heartily recommend this book for its testimony to the remarkable ingenuity and strength of which even the most ordinary people are capable.

Don't start this if you have something to do in a few minutes!
By D. Byington
Don't start this book if you have something else to do in a few minutes. That's what I did. I brought the book home and figured I'd read a little before my exercise class. But I missed that class, and sat entranced for the next couple of hours while I read about young Maria's first year of life, with bombs dropping around her and her mother shielding her young body with her own. It's the stuff of fiction, yet it is, horrifyingly, true.

But the book is far more than a litany of terrible things that happened to Maria in her years in Hungary. It is a beautifully woven whole cloth composed of the warp of historical events and the weft of her own experiences and feelings. Growing up in a country beset by war, hunger, and different forms of Communism wasn't easy, but the story is bigger than that. I loved learning about historical events that, in truth, I hadn't even wondered about before. The author did an amazing job balancing all of the pieces in this book; above all, it is infused with courage, honesty, and a love of her birth country.

I have to say that reading books like this one makes me appreciate my ordinary life in the United States of America and how easy I've had it. Courageous immigrants like Maria are the lifeblood of this country. I'm glad I got to read her story. Breathing Meditations

The Holocaust through a child's eyes
By Djan Stewart
I am ashamed to say how little I knew about Hungary during the Holocaust. Although I have known Maria Krenz for several decades, she never said anything about this part of her life, so the book was a revelation to me as a reader. The historical aspects are fascinating, but the part that stands out to me are the personal trials and tribulations she faced from the time she was very young. When her father died and she felt the weight of her mother's continued existence fall upon her shoulders, she carried a weight that few people could ever imagine, and she depicts it in this book with bravery. Her account of the Hungarian Revolution was truly heartbreaking, culminating in the deaths of so many heroic people, including Imre Nagy, who (through her description) had become a hero to me.

The fact that Maria not only overcame all of these obstacles in her life, but that she honored and cared for her mother right up until the day she died, is a tribute to the love and integrity that shines through the book, and through her life. The author is truly a courageous and ethical person. Her story is told in a way only she could tell it.
