Ember Island: A Novel, by Kimberley Freeman

In a compelling, complex story from the bestselling author of Wildflower Hill and Lighthouse Bay, two women separated by a century discover long-buried secrets in an Australian manor house.

In 1891, Tilly Kirkland is reeling with shock and guilt after her tempestuous marriage ends in horrific circumstances. Fleeing to the farthest place she knows, Tilly takes a job on Ember Island in Moreton Bay, Australia, where she becomes the governess to the prison superintendent’s precocious young daughter, Nell. Tilly knows she must keep the past hidden in order to start a new life, but she doesn’t know that Nell is watching her every move and writing it all down, hiding tiny journals all over their rambling manor home.

More than one hundred years later, bestselling novelist Nina Jones is struggling to complete her next book. A reporter asking questions about her great-grandmother sends Nina retreating to her family’s home on Ember Island, where she hopes to find her lost inspiration somewhere in the crumbling walls.

Though they are separated by years, both Tilly and Nina must learn that some secrets never stay buried, but what matters most is learning to trust your heart.

From Booklist
Two women, separated by more than a century, are connected by the secrets they carry with them to Ember Island. After her marriage to a deceitful opportunist is exposed as a sham, Tilly Kirkland accidently starts a fire that kills her unfaithful husband and his lover. Fleeing to a remote island off the coast of Australia, she assumes an alias and accepts a position as governess to Nell Holt, the precocious daughter of the local prison superintendent. Fast-forward more than 100 years and best-selling author Nina Jones, Nell’s great-granddaughter, takes refuge on Ember Island, nursing a broken heart and guarding an emotionally and professionally paralyzing secret. As Tilly and Nina are both drawn tentatively into new beginnings, their alternating stories are linked by their relationships with Nell. Romance, history, and a touch of windblown gothic mystery will appeal to a broad cross section of readers. --Margaret Flanagan

Review
"Freeman skillfully unites the stories of two women who live a century apart but both face the challenge of overcoming difficult pasts, and both under the lighthouse’s watchful presence. . . . Freeman’s moving tale gives her two heroines the unique chance to make a fresh start in life." (Publishers Weekly)

"The author’s description of the beautiful Australian coastline will linger with readers long after they finish the book." (Kirkus Reviews)

“Freeman weaves the two time periods together so seamlessly." (Booklist)

"What a perfect beach read. A sunken ship, buried treasure, a home on the beach by the lighthouse, sister relationships, adventure, and romance. Lighthouse Bay packs a lot into its two-pronged story." (atravelerslibrary.com)

"The novel's strength instead lies in Freeman's complex characters—capable of love and hate, shame and redemption. Both Beattie and Emma find themselves having to start over, and it is for these two women that readers cheer and sympathize." (Publishers Weekly)

"By the last satisfying scene, you may find yourself reluctantly parting with old friends who will live on once the cover has closed. Highly recommended." (Historical Novels Review)

"[Freeman] made her characters come to life, the scenery visible through her words, and the story was believable and made me want to read more." (Book Nook Club)

"The complexities of character and female relationships make this novel very rich and emotional." (Examiner.com)

"A gorgeous story of family and secrets and the redemptive power of love." (Kate Morton, author of The Distant Hours and The Forgotten Garden)

Wonderful escapism
By Karen B
Needing a great story to slip into and escape for a while, I was delighted to see that Kimberley Freeman's latest, Ember Island had downloaded on my Kindle. Loving Freeman's previous books, I couldn't wait to snuggle down with this one. Cup of tea: check; cushions to rest against: check; silence and no interruptions: check. Big sigh of contentment... open book... And....
Immediately, I was transported to Ember Island, a fictional place in Brisbane's Moreton Bay, and the struggles of internationally renown but reluctant writer, Nina, who, discovering her property on the island (once owned by her grandmother) has been damaged in a storm, arrives to oversee repairs. Only, the house isn't the only thing needing fixing. Nina is nursing a wounded heart and suffering from terrible writers' block and, as the story unfolds, readers learn she is burdened from carrying a guilty secret as well.

The story shifts gear back to the late 1800s and the life of orphaned Matilda Kirkland who, after her beloved grandfather dies, follows her new husband, Jasper, to Guernsey in the Channel Islands to take up life as a wife and all that entails. Only, when Tilly (as she is known) arrives, nothing is as it seems and her dream future with the dashing Jasper soon becomes a nightmare from which she must wake or perish.

Segueing between the two stories of two very different women, the connecting thread being Nina's grandmother, Eleanor or Nell, and the diaries she has left of her childhood on Ember Island, the reader is immersed in their separate travails and quest to find both love and peace, a place to settle their restless souls, but without sacrificing their sense of self.

While Freeman segues between the narratives and times, she doesn't compromise pace or plot and the reader is allowed the time to not only get to know the characters, but to enjoy the unfolding tale as well. At first, I confess, I found Nina a bit whiny, though I did appreciate the descriptions of the crippling doubt even a famous author experiences and her inability to shake these demons. Still, I also wanted to slap her and tell her to appreciate the success she clearly has had, the supportive people in her life and to just get on with it and stop complaining! It's testimony to Freeman's prose that I responded to Nina that way; she is a realised character and certainly, the further you get into the story the more you come to appreciate why Nina feels the way she does.

Tilly is both a product of her era and someone who struggles against the shackles of imposed gender roles and male authority but without sacrificing veracity. Sometimes, however, she is too easily seduced by those who don't have her best intentions at heart; the lessons she learns from them and their actions are hard indeed. The younger characters in the book, especially precocious Nell, are endearing and wise beyond their years.

This is a romance, and while it features good men and bad, it also explores female friendship and the ties that bind and those that are severed and why. I really enjoyed the female relationships and the love and trust and betrayal that are explored within these.

Overall, this is a marvellous page-turner over which I lost sleep trying to get to the end because I simply HAD to know what happened. Though I saw a couple of the twists, there were one or two I did not, and they quite took my breath away!

Anyone looking for a great read, pick up Ember Island, slip into its pages and escape - though here's a warning: you might not want to come back!

Ember Island
By P. Woodland
I must admit to liking books with a premise like the one in Ember Island - a present heroine finding herself through the help of a past relative. It's almost time travel but only through diary reading.

Nina is an author who is suffering from writer's block and so she sets off to the titular spot to try and find a way to write again. I have to admit that Nina is a bit of a pill. Very hard to like and rather whiny. While visiting the family home she finds her grandmother's diaries which takes the reader back in time to explore the story of Tilly, a young woman born in a time when women really had no control over their lives. Tilly marries but her husband is a louse and she finds herself running away for reasons I'm not going to share and she ends up on Ember Island as a governess to young Nell, the prison warden's daughter and Nina's great grandmother. As Nina learns about Tilly through those diaries she finds that perhaps some secrets need stay buried.

This is my first book by Ms. Freeman and I did enjoy it for the most part. It did drag in parts and it was confusing at times trying to keep the three women's stories going in my head. They do all come together in the end but at times I was a touch lost. As I wrote Nina was not overly likable and Tilly was not the easiest of characters either. Nell I found the be the most developed and the one I enjoyed the most. Unlikable characters are part of life but Nina didn't seem to grow, at least to me.

I enjoyed the parts in the past more than the ones in the present - I'm not sure precisely why. Perhaps because I just enjoy historical fiction more than I enjoy current fiction.

Interesting
By Shirley McDonald
This book starts off in the 1800's and the story of a young girl called Tilly, it then goes to this century and involves a girl called Nina, an author who is visiting Ember Island and resesarching her great-great grandmother's life. The story does flow and even though it goes between life now and the life in the 1800's it wasn't disjointed. An interesting book and being set in Australia I probably enjoyed it more.

Coyote America: A Natural and Supernatural History, by Dan Flores

With its uncanny night howls, unrivaled ingenuity, and amazing resilience, the coyote is the stuff of legends. In Indian folktales it often appears as a deceptive trickster or a sly genius. But legends don’t come close to capturing the incredible survival story of the coyote. As soon as Americans—especially white Americans—began ranching and herding in the West, they began working to destroy the coyote. Despite campaigns of annihilation employing poisons, gases, helicopters, and engineered epidemics, coyotes didn’t just survive, they thrived, expanding across the continent from Anchorage, Alaska, to New York’s Central Park. In the war between humans and coyotes, coyotes have won hands-down.

Coyote America is both an environmental and a deep natural history of the coyote. It traces both the five-million-year-long biological story of an animal that has become the “wolf” in our backyards, as well as its cultural evolution from a preeminent spot in Native American religions to the hapless foil of the Road Runner. A deeply American tale, the story of the coyote in the American West and beyond is a sort of Manifest Destiny in reverse, with a pioneering hero whose career holds up an uncanny mirror to the successes and failures of American expansionism.

An illuminating biography of this extraordinary animal, Coyote America isn’t just the story of an animal’s survival—it is one of the great epics of our time.

Review
“A masterly synthesis of scientific research and personal observation.... Much of the charm of Coyote America lies in the interludes in which the author sketches his own evolution from the teenager who thoughtlessly shot a coyote in his native Louisiana to the historian and naturalist whose fascination with the mammal that early travelers called ‘the prairie wolf’ knows no bounds.”
—Wall Street Journal

“[An] engaging study.”
—The New Yorker

“Coyotes have a legendary appeal in North America, from the folklore tales of indigenous tribes to everyone's favorite ‘Super Genius,’ Wile E. Coyote. In Coyote America, Flores does more than just shed light on the legend; he explores 5 million years of biological history that lead up to the evolution of the modern coyote (Canis latrans) and details the unique versatility of an animal that has continued to thrive despite human campaigns of annihilation.”
—Chicago Tribune

“A wonderful read ... chock full of detailed information and stories about this most adaptable mammal.”
—Psychology Today

“It is often impossible to separate how animals behave ‘wild’ from how they behave around humans. Coyotes are a startling example.... Historian Dan Flores has fun describing how coyotes make a mockery of our attempts to put nature in order: ‘It turns out, the coyote really is The Dude, and The Dude absolutely abides.’”
—New Scientist

“Historian Flores has written about the American West for decades, so it’s no surprise his gaze should turn to the region’s scrappy mascot. Over the past 500 years, the original desert-dweller has expanded its territory as far north as Alaska, south into the tropics and deep into many cities. That ubiquity has created a host of problems for both the animal and its neighbors, human and otherwise. Flores captures all sides of the situation in this detailed portrait of an American icon.”
—Discover

“[An] absorbing book.... The coyote stories in this book are among the best, and Flores is a master storyteller.”
—Natural History

“Compassionate and captivating… [Flores] warns us, ‘coexistence with coyotes is an essential lesson.’ His exuberant book is the lesson plan.”
—Christian Science Monitor

“[A] fascinating scientific and cultural history.... Deft prose and wide-ranging research do their part to carry Flores through the grimmer chapters of his narrative.... Whatever the coyote may still be wanting, that list no longer includes a book to do it justice.”
—New Mexico Magazine

"The most compelling part of Flores’ story — and what makes Coyote America an important book — is what it says about the U.S. government’s misguided and continuing battle against the coyote.”
—Santa Fe New Mexican

“Flores stares long and deeply into the coyote’s eyes, returning to us with cultural treasures both sparkling and lyrical.”
—Open Letters Monthly

“A must read for all Americans, whether you are a farmer or rancher, a suburban or city folk.”
—Mother Earth News

“The most compelling part of Flores’ story — and what makes Coyote America an important book — is what it says about the U.S. government’s misguided and continuing battle against the coyote.”
—Pasatiempo

“Coyote America possesses an extraordinary sweep and is an intriguing read.”
—Albuquerque Journal

“Wide-ranging, engaging, informative… Flores is both a fine scholar and a most engaging writer. He argues most persuasively that we need to learn to live with coyote and the other beings with which we share this earth.”
—National Parks Traveler

“In a straightforward style, the author unpacks the myths and urban legends surrounding the coyote and conveys his admiration and respect for this incredibly intelligent predator.... Highly recommended for natural history enthusiasts interested in moving beyond the conventional wisdom about coyotes to gain a deeper understanding of their presence in our midst.”
—Library Journal

“[A] spirited blend of history, anthropology, folklore, and biology that is capable of surprises.... Well written throughout and just the right length, Flores’ book makes a welcome primer for living in a land in which coyotes roam freely–in, that is to say, the Coyote America of his title.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“Flores’s mix of edification and entertainment is a welcome antidote to a creature so often viewed with fear.”
—Publishers Weekly

“Nature lovers, students of U.S. natural resource policy and those charmed by the native American ‘song-dog’ will be engrossed.”
—Shelf Awareness

“As I was reading Coyote America, a coyote walked through our backyard. Magic occurs in these pages.”
—Terry Tempest Williams, author of The Hour of Land

“A biologist once told me, 'When the last man dies, a coyote will be howling over his grave.' This splendid book makes it clear why that's true, and why the persistent, enduring wildness of this remarkable neighbor should give us great delight.”
—Bill McKibben, author of Wandering Home

“With a deft blend of science and history, Dan Flores shows us the coyote as trickster, survivor, and, ultimately, a reflection of ourselves. Coyote America paints a vivid and long overdue portrait of an iconic animal. It’s a terrific book.”
—Thor Hanson, author of The Triumph of Seeds and Feathers

“In this brilliant book, Flores traces the wane and wax of the coyote. Their story is interwoven with our story, but it is also like our story, that of a species that has faced challenges and overcome them. Read this book if you want to understand the wild canids among us and also, perhaps, a little bit more about yourself.”
—Rob Dunn, author of The Man Who Touched His Own Heart

“A wily writer meets his natural subject. With erudition, pathos, and seductive humor, Dan Flores tells coyote stories that expose the animalism of Americans, and humans everywhere. The pleasure of his book is the feeling of being alive.”
—Jared Farmer, author of Trees in Paradise: A California History

“Dan Flores’s Coyote America is an utterly fascinating look at the life and range of Canis latrans. It brilliantly blends environmental history with old-fashioned storytelling. Flores is a master of the American West and a personal hero. A must read!”
—Douglas Brinkley, Professor of History at Rice University and author of Rightful Heritage: Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Land of America

“Think of Coyote America as a biography of our continent's most enigmatic and successful predator, but don't stop there. It is also a meditation, eloquent and insightful, on our relationship to wildlife, to nature, and even to our national culture. When you've read it, you won't sing the book's praises, you'll howl them.”
—William deBuys, author of The Last Unicorn and A Great Aridness

From the Inside Flap

The howl of a coyote at dusk is one of the chief symbols of the American West, but in recent years, we’ve been hearing it farther and farther east. Even New York City—about as far from the Southwest as one can get, both geographically and figuratively—has been the site of a rash of coyote sightings for more than a decade. From Central Park to the Aleutian Islands, Los Angeles to Bangor, Maine, coyotes have been found in places they’ve never been seen before: one was even discovered riding a commuter train in Oregon.

The coyote, it turns out, loves the American people. This is ironic, given that since the nineteenth century, Americans have been at war with the coyote. Nevertheless, the coyote has not only survived our onslaught, it has thrived, using the streets of our cities as springboards for a takeover of the continent. Dan Flores, acclaimed historian of the American West, charts the species’ explosive growth not just as a natural phenomenon but a cultural one, with roots in the Native American stories of a trickster god and Warner Brothers’ depiction of the hapless Wile E. Coyote. The result is an American avatar: the coyote isn’t just some very successful dog—it is us.

About the Author

We've been trying to wipe out coyotes for a century (at taxpayer expense). Coyotes now are in every state but Hawai'i.
By lyndonbrecht
Any book by Dan Flores is worth a read. There are a number of books on coyotes, but this one is the best overall I've read. It covers several broad themes: coyote resilience, coyote individualism, coyote biology (including a little evolution, but all the science is easily understood), coyotes and people (in the broad sense--native American tales, coyotes in the city and more), and much of the book deals with the persecution of coyotes, This last is important, and Flores discusses a century of shooting, poisoning and cruelty--still going on--that must have killed several tens of millions of them. A sorry tale it is, mostly a taxpayer subsidy of agricultural hatred of predators.

Flores says that the coyote resilience is because they can function well as individuals or in groups, and can quickly adjust to the ecological possibilities of an area. This resilience evolved in part because of another kind of persecution: wolves kill coyotes and coyotes had to evolve ways to cope with that. Human eradication of wolves in most of the USA opened up opportunity for coyotes. Flores thinks coyotes are a lot like humans in being flexible and coping with stress.

There's an amusing but serious point in American attitudes. People who like the animal say "ki-YOH-tee" and people who dislike the animal (and rural Westerners) say "ki-yote." There's a bit of a cultural war over coyotes, although not as severe and militant as over wolves.

Flores discusses coyotes in cities, primarily Los Angeles and Chicago, although they've made it to New York and even Staten Island. They're in all states but Hawai'i. Flores discusses coyote mixing with wolf and dog populations. Perhaps the coyote is developing subspecies better able to cope with the human environment of cities and suburbs. The elimination of feral dogs from cities (violently done in the 19th century and domestic dogs gone feral do not last long) did the same thing elimination of wolves did, opening up areas for coyote opportunism. Coyotes can be dangerous, killing a toddler in California in 1981 and an adult woman in 2009 (in Nova Scotia). Some do eat cats, but coyotes cleaning up outdoor cats is something of an urban myth; they eat mice and rats and insects, and don't raid dumpsters.

One almost side discussion is whether there really is something called a Red Wolf. Some research has shown they have 80% coyote genes and if they are not a real species, we're spending a lot of money on them. Flores looks at the evidence and finds it rather more complicated.

Informative History of a Misunderstood Creature
By Cathy
America’s history with the coyote is long and detailed, ranging from Native American legend and American species cleansing to the modern urban coyote populations. Dan Flores records that history here with a deliberate hand, full of respect and awe for the coyote without deifying them. This book is full of detail, and while far from comprehensive, it provides a digestible overview.

Dan Flores writes in a vivid, evocative style without veering into self-indulgent purple prose. His book’s arc follows the coyote more or less chronologically, explaining the ins and outs of America’s complex relationship with them. Occasionally his own experiences are peppered in for a personal touch and connection to the animal.

This book is recommended not just for animal enthusiasts or history buffs, but to anyone interested in the intriguing mythology and history of a remarkable creature. The legend of the coyote extends far beyond America’s attempted genocide, revealing a complex interspecies relation.

Learning from the coyote
By Philip Aaron
COYOTE AMERICA, A Natural and Supernatural History by Dan Flores addresses the evolutionary and spiritual influence of the oldest predator of the North American continent during its more than 1500 year saga of survival to avoid extinction by humans. In a very thorough study, Flores traces the mythical history of the American icon from its spiritual image for Native Americans to its present day embodiment in the Coywolf, a coyote-wolf hybrid now found in large numbers in the north eastern provinces of Canada.
Despite large scale and expensive national programs to eliminate the coyote it has survived and is presently found all over North America including a city or suburb near you. According to Flores it is these massive efforts to eradicate the coyote that triggered evolutionary forces of adaption which have allowed it to flourish and invade all parts of the continent.
Coyote America is a veritable encyclopedia of all things coyote from its image as a god for Native Americans, to efforts of the federal government to eradicate the species, to the iconic image of Disney’s Wile Coyote. The work includes a bibliography of about 100 books which Flores used to compile just about everything one would want to know about North America’s oldest predator.
Considering the present ecological consciousness, it is hard to imagine the costly efforts that humans have expended in recent history to eradicate a whole species of animals by poisoning, gunning down from airplanes or trapping. With the passage of the Endangered Species Act in 1973 and the influence of books such as Silent Spring we humans now realize the importance of all creatures to achieve a balance in nature between prey and predators.
Flores credits Walt Disney for popularizing the cult of the coyote and telling the coyote’s side of the story which Mark Twain and other disparaged by writing about what a “varmint” it was and the need to eradicate it from the earth. Disney popularized it cunning and attractive characteristics in films like The Coyote’s Lament and cartoons featuring the Road Runner to gain support for saving coyotes, the original trickster, from extinction.
The story of the survival and flourishing of the coyote can be a source of hope for the humans as we face enormous ecological challenges to the continuation of our own species. The basic evolutionary force appears to be for life and the coyote has shown us a way to overcome massive efforts to destroy its future. These four footed canines have continually adapted so that now they are stronger, more resilient and genetically more diverse than ever before. Can we learn from them?

Speaking Activities That Don't Suck: Foolproof Ways to Force Your EFL Students to Produce Enormous Amounts of English, by English Teacher

One of the most painful aspects of any TEFL job (except of course for the low salaries, terrible prospects, and awful hours) is getting the students to speak.

Far too many teachers exhaust themselves trying to entertain and motivate and gently coax English out of surly, exhausted, or shy students - but yet again English Teacher X, with more than 15 years experience at some of the worst language schools in the world, is here to help.

Here is a book full of clear, succint, and superbly effective ways to give your students virtually NO CHOICE but to produce HUGE AMOUNTS of English in a variety of classroom situations, all presented with English Teacher X's usual cynical irreverence.

Among the issues dealt with in this book are:

-how to increase the amount of speaking in grammar / listening / reading activities, and how to maximize speaking in your classes in general

- how to prepare for individual students who don't want to use a book

- more than 50 short grammar- and topic-based speaking activities that can be done with little or no preparation from the teacher

- how to approach "conversation classes" and how to create lists of questions that will ENSURE that neither you nor the students run out of things to sayand much more!.

From large classes to individuals, from beginners to advanced classes, English Teacher X provides you with a comprehensive set of activities, strategies and tricks to help you deal with even the most uncommunicative and recalcitrant of students.

WARNING! This book contains rude language, crude humor, and a generally bad attitude

A few insights
By Micah E. Sabol
I was hoping for a miracle book, and thought that there should be more ideas to make for success. But! When I thought about what he wrote about getting students to speak...?! That is indeed the most important part of the English lesson. I started using his ideas in my classes and I have found it very helpful. So...the book is a good buy for myself. I have also lived almost 10 years abroad teaching English and the author is correct about the types of students that one has to teach. If he deleted the profanity, the book size would be reduced by 60%, and I would recommed that! However, the few genuine ideas won from suffering (he's lived in Russia you know!), can really make the book a practical buy.

Brutally course but immensely helpful
By Fibonacci
I understand that teaching in another country can feel a lot like teaching without rules. I understand how someone would want to take advantage of that to write a book that clearly ignores all of the cultural norms we associate with the teaching profession, and I'll admit, there is some valuable information in this book, but it's rough. It drips with foul language and bad attitude. It's like getting something to eat from a garbage can (something I see far too often here in Cambodia); it may be nutritious, but your going to have to scrape the disgusting parts off before you ingest it. So, if you don't mind that the prose is unprofessional and foul and are willing to scavenge for the nuggets of truth, this book has some great insights from someone with real world experience. You'll likely get more and better ideas than you would from many scholarly tomes.

Pure gold
By Emmett Fields
I'm about seven months into my first TEFL teaching experience in China.

100% recommendation: You should buy this book.

One: Let me tell you from experience: the author nails the experience I've had here *precisely*, in a way that's impossible to describe to someone who hasn't been here.

Two: The lesson ideas are short, no-bulls***, and (trust me if you haven't been here) PRECISELY what you need to hear to figure out how to survive in some of these English "Training schools". (We will use this term very loosely.) I used material from his method today. It works. It's not beautiful and sweet and inspired: it's practical and pragmatic, and designed to keep the teacher alive.

Three: This book uses bitterly black humor and language to describe what is sometimes an unspeakably asinine experience, which makes me feel a lot better. It also will upset some of our more gentle readers, so don't take it too harshly, or better yet don't read it if this is you.

Excellent
By Tracey
I loved this book immediately just looking at the illustration on the front cover. And the story didn't disappoint. So simple, but felt by so many parents and their little ones. The illustrations are astounding. As a mother of biracial children, finding books with characters of diverse ethnicity, culture, etc., is a rarity. My 6 yr. old granddaughter read it for a week straight after it arrived in the mail. Continually running her fingers over the pictures saying, "Her hair is like mine Nana!" Good job and congratulations to the author Nadine and the illustrator. Looking forward to your second book.

Working With Offenders: A Guide to Concepts and Practices, by Rob White, Hannah Graham

This book provides a theoretically informed guide to the practice of working with offenders in different settings and for different purposes. It deals with topics such as offender rehabilitation, case management, worker-offender relationships, working with difficult clients and situations, collaboration, addressing complex needs, and processes of integration. The book offers a unique perspective on working with offenders in that it incorporates three key elements. As part of the latter, it provides different types of data, including descriptions of programs and selected statistics from each jurisdiction, and presents this information in easy-to-read formats. The chapters are structured around a dual focus of workers and their environments on the one hand, and the nature of the offenders with whom they work on the other. The condition and situation of workers is thus considered in the context of the condition and situation of offenders, and the relationship between the two. The book is intended to be relevant and familiar to those already working in the field, as well as to introduce contemporary principles and practices to those wishing to do so in the future. Each chapter concludes with two key features. The first, Further Reading, is oriented toward concepts and the 'why' questions of practice. The second, Key Resources, alerts readers to appropriate manuals and handbooks, and the 'how' questions of practice. This includes reference to evidence-based examples of good practice and specific intervention models.

The Co-ed Killer, by Margaret Cheney

The story of Edmund Kemper III first surfaced when at fourteen he killed his grandparents in a cool rage. After five years in a California hospital for sex offenders, this intelligent giant (IQ 136; height 6'9") emerged to carry out the meticulously rehearsed murders of six hitchhiking girls, culminating in the murder, mutilation - and more - of his mother and her friend. Tried and found guilty, Kemper was labeled sane so that he could be given a life sentence in a prison. Margaret Cheney tells a totally compelling story based on Kemper's enormously detailed confession and extensive interviews with scores of those involved with Kemper's gruesome career. At the same time she perceptively explores Kemper's twisted motivations and the implications of his crimes and trial in a culture that seems to actively promote the acceptance of savagery.

The Butcher Of Santa Cruz "Son Knows Best!"
By Kill City Profiler
Edmund Emil Kemper III, 6 foot 9" giant, sadistic necrophile, convicted in a string of brutal mutilation murders around California's Santa Cruz area in the 1970's.

Typical child disturbed behaviours such as, hurting and killing animals, the mutilation of his sister's dolls and finally progressing to murder.

He murdered his maternal grandparents when he was only 14.

Remanded to a state hospital for treatment, Kemper was paroled in 1969 to the one person his psychiatrists recommended him never see. His mother.

Between May 1972 and February 1973, he murdered five co-eds from the local university. He mutilated their bodies, decapitated their heads and had sex with their headless bodies. He took the heads with him and buried them up in the mountains where he resided with his mother.

In April 1973, he killed his mother and one of her friends that were visiting.

He killed her with such fury, he cut off her head and hands, raped her lifeless corpse and placed her head on a mantle piece and threw darts at her severed head.

He tore her larynx out placing it down the garbage disposal. He stated that even then she never stopped bitching at him due to the fact that the garbage disposal unit jammed and spat her larynx back out.

He finally decided to give himself up and voluntarily surrendered to police and subsequently received a life sentence, which he is still currently serving.

Margaret Cheney's book is the best and most detailed account of Kemper's case.

Chasing up the first printing is a very expensive and difficult experience but a must for the true-crime collector. Chasing up a near fine copy with a clean dust-jacket is an even harder one.

A cheaper alternative is a revised, updated and re-titled edition from the original 1976 Walker Publishing book `The Co-Ed Killer' titled: `WHY- The Serial Killer In America'

Basics in Medical Education, by Zubair Amin, Khoo Hoon Eng

Medical education -- the art and science behind medical teaching and learning -- has progressed remarkably. Teaching and learning have become more scientific and rigorous, curricula are based on sound pedagogical principles, and problem-based and other forms of active and self-directed learning have become the mainstream. We have progressed from the role of problem-identifier to that of solution-provider.

This book provides a balanced overview of the "why" of medical education, emphasizing the need for change and adaptation, and the "how", by demonstrating the way concepts and theories of medical education can be of immediate benefit to the medical teacher. In this improved second edition, student assessment, curriculum, outcome-based education, clinical teaching, and problem-based learning receive more emphasis with the addition of new chapters, essential updates, and consolidation. The tone is more pragmatic, with implementable examples and incorporation of newer evidence and better practices. However, one thing has not changed: the book still targets medical teachers without a formal background in education.

Contents: A Bird s-Eye View of Medical Education; Educational Concepts and Philosophies; Defining Outcomes and Objectives; Instructional Methodology: General; Instructional Methodology: Clinical Teaching; Instructional Methodology: Problem-Based Learning; Assessment; Assessment of Knowledge; Assessment of Clinical Skills; Evaluation of Impact.

A hurried piece of work
By A Customer
This is generally a disappointing book. While the authors attempt to describe the principles of education in the context of teaching medical students, they appear to have, in the process, extended their ambition to cover the entire spectrum of issues in medical education. The end result is that the content in the book has become too diverse and difficult to manage. This is evident by the large number of ultra-short chapters in the book.
In trying to cover too wide a scope, the conciseness of the writing style does not work to the authors' advantage. It becomes difficult to explain the basic educational concepts when the text is too short. A significant number of grammatical and spelling errors fill the text. They unfortunately distract the readers' attention from focusing on the subject matter.
The first author does not sound like a Chinese. It is perplexing therefore as to why he chooses to use an example in the Chinese language to illustrate his text, and, in the process makes a blatant mistake that is not picked up by his co-author, whom I belief is a Chinese.
While he was describing curriculum reform and how to cope with change, he made the statement that: 'The Chinese character for "change" has dual connotations to it: on the one hand it means "danger", on the other hand it also means "opportunity."
For anyone who is familiar with the Chinese language, this statement is obviously wrong. The Chinese word that has dual connotations of danger and opportunity is not "change" but "crisis". It worries me as to why such a fundamental mistake has gone unnoticed by the editors and found its way to print.
Many educational principles are described in the book, but they lack adequate illustrative examples. Going by the nature of the examples included, one of the authors is likely to be a paediatrician. While the book does give a broad overview of what medical education is all about, it may not necessarily have explained the "basics" adequately, simply because too much scope is being covered. This is not a book that the reader is likely to be keen to keep on his shelf for reference. The content is far too skimpy and superficial.

Great for the holidays!
By Andrew
I purchased this book for Keith Chapman's arrangement of "Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella" as it is a very impressive, yet challenging piece. I didn't get to use it since I was gone for Christmas, and didn't have enough time to work it up to the level I wanted it to be, but really enjoyed using the settings of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing", "Away in a Manger" for offertory/prelude selections. "Pastorale" and "Gaelic Air" (variations on O Danny Boy) are also great and appropriate for nearly any time of the year. There are several other great settings in there appropriate for the holidays that I haven't tackled yet, but all in all the book is wonderful.
