Straight Man Gay, by Danny Culpepper

What would you do if true love showed up in the wrong package−
and knocked your socks off?

American actor John Kaiser lives in London where he’s found fame as a television celebrity and theatrical star. He unwittingly falls in love with Brian Mallory, a reclusive Scottish millionaire who takes refuge in his London penthouse once a year to conduct business. Brian sees John as a shy, nervous, and clumsy new friend, but John hopes they’ll be much more than just friends—until he learns of a love rival: curvaceous, blonde, and sexy Carol Lexington. He’s devastated when he realizes he can’t compete with this beautiful woman. Or can he? And even if he could win Brian’s love, what other forces would lie in wait to tear them apart?

From the ritzy charity galas of London’s elite to an English countryside manor and a stunning, riverfront luxury penthouse, this love story takes you on a journey of humor, happiness, pain, jealousy, and shocking betrayal. Filled with quirky best friends, catastrophic events, and undying love and devotion, it’s the story of a straight man who falls in love with a gay man who did everything wrong and still got everything right.

Straight Man Gay does what Giovanni’s Room and Brokeback Mountain couldn’t: It takes the shame out of being gay and in love.

From the Author
I hope you fall in love with my characters. I spent more time than you will ever know creating their personalities, morals, ethics, values, and demeanors. The storyline is not meant to be fast paced or outrageous, or to insult your intelligence with unbelievable stupidity. It's meant to mimic life--the everyday things that can happen to all of us--so I hope you will read it leisurely and "visualize" what's unfolding on each page and at each moment. You should come away from this story feeling proud of who you are and wanting to tell others about it, or I haven't done my job as a great story teller.

About the Author
I live 40 minutes outside San Francisco in what is appropriately termed Silicon Valley. I have only recently begun calling myself a writer. The "bug" didn't hit me until 2009 at the age of 46, but it hit in a VERY big way and the result was a 144,000-word novel called Straight Man Gay. Before that, I had done nothing in the field of writing. I can't say I'm a fanatic when it comes to writing. I have no interest in writer's retreats or critique groups. I've never taken a creative writing course. I've never aspired to become a journalist or a screenwriter, and I didn't join the South Bay California Writers Club until February of 2011. It would take a very big gun in my back to get me to stand up in front of anyone and read aloud from my first book, but I'm almost finished with my second book, Straight Man Gay Two, and I look forward to every opportunity I get to work on it.
I write for the joy of telling a story I think is humorous, positive and believable, and that I hope others will enjoy, too. I believe authors need to spend more time providing a unique experience for readers and stop generating boring, formula-based scenarios. If a writer takes the time to create quality work and strong characters, the reader will always come back begging for more.

Charming romp
By C Green
This is a British comedy. A handsome gay American actor, John, is working in a British TV series. He has an out of work actor/model boyfriend he is trying to dump, a fabulous cast of flaming to semi flaming gay friends, and an over the top manager. The manager introduces him to one of his financial backers, straight, Scottish millionaire Brian. Brian once said on a a TV interview that he had a crush on John. It turns that the manager put him up to it for publicity for John but they end up striking up a friendship.

Meanwhile an ex-trophy wife is looking for another wealthy trophy and has her eyes on Brian. The book oddly starts from her point of view. She is not a funny or likable character while all the other characters are. Fortunately the book quickly switches to other points of view between the more likable characters. She has limited screen time after that, except for as a villaness who drives our straight millionaire and gay actor together.

Some scenes in this story are hilarious. The characters are well drawn and interesting. You end up liking the characters and wanting them all to be happy. There is some tension as John falls for Brian and recognizes he is being an idiot falling for a straight guy. John is oblivious, but does eventually become "gay for John". Hence the title "straight man gay" Brian's confusion and attraction are sweet and charmingly described.

A little goes a long way
By Rob Stauffer
I suppose the moral of this story is: Always take the author's opinion of his/her work with a massive dose of salt.
The good news about this book is that the author really does seem to be a talented story teller. Unfortunately, the main characters aren't likable enough to sustain interest throughout the duration of the book.
The story pivots on two men. John is a narcissistic actor who is stuck in a relationship with a jealous, vindictive, alcoholic. He feels that he can't dump the drunk without damaging his public image. This argument lacks credibility though, because the author has given the character of David, the boyfriend, absolutely no redeeming qualities. As written, David's character is so publicly obnoxious that the idea that the tabloids would ever side with this guy is insane. The papparazzi would have chewed this bitch up and spit him out long ago.
Brian, the other main character is a straight, people hating Scot with Trump-like wealth and almost as personable. One gets the impression that John falls for Brian's tactile clothing more than anything. Brian remains rather two dimensional because the author spends too much time inventorying his possessions, and not enough time getting to know his character. He comes across like a character out of "Dynasty". You can tell he's Scottish because when he speaks, his begins his sentences with, "Aye"...
The supporting characters, while never developed fully, are at least quite eccentric, and often fun.
The author seems rather proud of the book's length. However, the story would have been improved by some heavy-handed editing. Far too much of the book is taken up with John's repetitive angst over his boyfriend and Brian's internal struggles not to despise every one around him. Bigger isn't always better.
Overall, a novel that could have been a fun romp, ends up being tedious.

4.5 A good read
By Brenda L
This is unique. Truly a gay for you romance, where scent and personality are the keys to love. Was very surprised about the book, quite entertaining. The reason for the rating more details on the past of our heroes would have been gratefully appreciated.
