Although many ideas never make it off the page and most new ventures fail, we tend to hear about people when they are successful, not when they are struggling. This creates a distorted perception of how people succeed. Serial entrepreneur and thought leader Faisal Hoque and journalist Lydia Dishman have examined the stories of a variety of leaders who faced ill health, professional setbacks, emotional loss, and a host of other life-changing events, in order to illustrate how each achieved personal transformation and success by mining their own resilience. Resilience is the universal human capacity to face, overcome, and even be strengthened by experiences of adversity. The book is divided into three sections, each of which are key concepts in the development of one's own ability to bend, and not break, in the face of a personal or professional setback. The individual stories examine the essential tools needed to overcome obstacles and seize upon an opportunity. They incorporate practical applications for reframing your reaction to setbacks. They help guide you through a process that can redefine fear as a simple signal that something isn t working. This book offers powerful approaches to diffuse strong emotion in the moment of crisis, and opens up opportunities for re-examining your personal definition of success. The book illuminates how anyone can attain the resilience that s required to repeatedly push forward in the face of conflict.

A short book with a lot of heart!
By Achim Nowak
This is a short book with a lot of heart. That's what I liked most as I read SURVIVE TO THRIVE. The simple structure - 9 stories by successful entrepreneurs who have bounced back from business challenges, 3 guiding practices for each story - is refreshing and easy to digest. The stories resonated with me deeply. They were very personal and very real. Instead of selling us the 3 easy steps to being a successful entrepreneur, SURVIVE TO THRIVE tells us the how-to-succeed by learning, by growing, by staying human, by not being perfect story. It's also a tale of very different definitions of what success looks like. This is a fine book for anyone who wants to learn from successful entrepreneurs who are "keeping it real." An inspiring read!

Awesome insight into the real struggles
By Stephanie Ostlund
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed reading this book. I felt that it was inspirational in terms of helping the reader to feel that the small issues of life happen and can be overcome, not easily, but with persistent effort and time. I enjoyed the small stories throughout the book; however, it would have been nicer to read more about the different people and their struggles. I guess I could follow up with their own autobiographies and books because I think the majority of those featured had their own books and programs for purchase. Yet, the self-sales pitch by each person, or on their behalf, didn’t stop me from enjoying this particular read. I found myself highlighting and marking the pages to come back to it later. I am intrigued to try the challenges at the end of the chapters to help myself become a better me.
The mantras that are found throughout the book are ones that I can see myself sticking to my mirror in the bathroom, in a similar way to Anne Grady does. There are little helpful pathways to follow and evaluate yourself by. One which stuck out to me was the “I am able to guide my destiny.” This might seem true, and it might not, depending on the type of day that I am having. But the authors suggest to give up control and let what might happen happen, which frankly is rather terrifying. Actually, most of what the authors suggest throughout the book is rather terrifying when you think about it, but that is kind of the point- to go outside your comfort zone and become resilient, and become what you want to be, not what others think you should be.
Throughout the book, there are little saying from various people. I really thought, when speaking about resilience, that the one by St. Francis of Assisi is completely true and relevant. They quote him as saying, “Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible” (68). That is so very true. There are points in our lives where just about everything seems impossible, but all we need to do is take that one step forward, and eventually things follow and fall into place.
Another thought, shared by Kamal Ravikant is the idea that “money and power... have the ability to make good people inhumane” (140). We see that every day in our world. People allow money and power to corrupt them. They more they have, the more likely they are to become corrupt and inhumane.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is seeking to do something daring in their life. I would also recommend it to anyone who needs a little boost in self-confidence. There are people out there who struggle- that’s okay. They made it and so can you.

Short but inspirational
By jksmith4
This is an inspirational book meant to give people different perspectives on difficult situations. This book included struggles that people faced such as deafness, death, sickness, and business struggles that people have overcome and what these people got from those situations. Personally, I love inspirational/motivational stories so in that fact I found this book interesting. I liked that the book told what each person got/learned from the situation and how they became a better/bigger person because of them. I wish that it would have also included some things that each person would have done differently. I really liked some of the different quotes in each of the stories. The second part of the book went over what some people needed to succeed, like a group of people for support or the ability to overcome their fear. Finally the last part goes over positivity and things that the “characters” figured out that they can do. Overall it was a positive book that gives hope to those who are struggles in a wide range of situations. Sometimes I did feel like I was skipping around but that was in order to give different situations and different perspectives so I understand that the book was meant to feel like that. The book did not take long to read so that the readers did not lose interest which is another positive. I would recommend this book to pretty much anyone: those who are struggling with anything, and those who are “sitting pretty” because at some point something is going to hit and everyone needs to be resilient enough to get through it.
