Good vignettes but lacks cohesion

The stories were good but I got confused at times with the flow of the book. Most of the chapters had a year included in the chapter title but at times it seem to add to the confusion of the flow of the book. Also, there were incidents that were given a whole chapter and then are never referred to again. For example, early in the book Magnus, a main character, was severely wounded on a botched trading voyage but we never hear about the wound or his recover again. The individual vignettes are well written and interesting but there is no cohesion to the book

Very Good Historical-Fiction. Call of the Wolf Will be a Big Hit, Worthy of my Time & Money..

This Historical-Fiction novel of is the first in a series. I liked the plot but would have wanted to better identify with the characters. Doing this is best accomplished through showing me what makes them think or act in the way they do. The author comes close at times, but alas, tells us what they feel, rather than shows us.

Language: Straightforward English absent of any foul language.

Dialogue: rings true to character and setting.

To demonstrate this writer's style and the pace of his writing, I have included an excerpt taken from near the mid-point of his novel.

EXCERPT

"You will not amount to anything," she would tell him. "Your father died protecting us from those animals and all you can do is follow them into the woods." It was a fascination she couldn't understand. These magnificent animals acted on instinct and the bidding of their master Fenrir. How could he blame them for what was not their choice? Yes, he had become their predator, but what was once done in anger was now an act of honor. His wife was from an honorable family, but not one with many resources. Vargr's mother had planned their marriage in honor of his father's wishes. He had made arrangements with her clan when they were young and, like the wolves, they had little choice in the matter. She was a fine woman, taller than most other women in the village, and not unattractive. She wore her hair braided and rolled up in a bun, which accentuated her full cheeks, and she could laugh. He would tell her stories and the house would fill with her voice; he loved that about her. However, like his mother, she was not happy about his wanderings.

"Don't you love me?" she queried.

"You know I do, why do you always ask?" he would respond.

"Because you are always gone into the woods. Other men leave their wives for the sea, but you leave..."

Bottom Line:

Call of the Wolf is a good, even a very good novel, even if the writing falls a bit short in description and character development. I rate it at a solid four stars. Reading it does give me a feel for Viking history.

So, I will definitely read the next book in the series for certain.

Amazing read

Call of the Wolf left me breathless. It's not often I read stories that are Christian influenced, I found this one quite fascinating. The details of Tue history of Viking culture were quite good and well written. Dr. Paul W. Perkins obviously did in depth research, and it shows.
He included several prayers by the Vikings, and included funeral rites. The story pulled me in and dismantle me go. I read the entire story in a day, staying up quite late and getting up early to finish it. I couldn't wait to read more!
I will be buying the next book and hoping for even more.
Thank you, Dr. Perkins, for showing many sides to Viking culture as well as their belief systems without bias.

THough I am a HUGE Guido Crepax fan, this particular edition has missing pages! Get the hardcover or other editions, for some reason this one had a few pages omitted for printing costs and the missing pages are some of the best.

About the Author
Monica D. Clyde is a native of Düsseldorf. She received her Ph.D. in German literature from the University of California at Berkeley. She has taught German language and literature at Mills College, Cañada College, the Defense Language Institute, and the College of San Mateo. She was Director of Faculty Development and Scholarship at Saint Mary's College of California until her retirement in 2003. She coauthored Texte und Kontexte and was contributor to Mosaik: Deutsch Kultur und Luteratur, Third Edition, both intermediate college-level German textbooks.

Jacqueline Vansant received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. She has taught at Hamilton College and Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and currently teaches at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, where she also heads the German section of the Department of Humanities. Her particular interest in language pedagogy lies in reading and reading strategies. She has written widely on contemporary Austrian literature and culture, served as coeditor of Modern Austrian Literature from 2000-05, and is presently working on a book entitled Austria: Made in Hollywood.

Robert Di Donato is Professor of German and Chair of the Department of German, Russian, and East Asian Languages with Hebrew and Arabic at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. He is the chief academic and series developer of Fokus Deutsch, a telecourse with accompanying texts and materials for teaching and learning German, and coauthor of The Big Yellow Book of German Verbs. He has also edited two volumes for the Central States Conference, written articles aout language methodology, and has given numerous keynote speeches, workshops and presentations - both in the United States and abroad - on teaching methods and teacher education. He has won a number of awards for his work in language education, including the Florence Steiner Award for Leadership in Foreign Language Education.

Completely Useless, unless it's all you have.

There's really no point to owning this book if you're enrolled in a German class, and there's absolutely no reason for a self-learner to pick this up otherwise. There's a lot of people who say this book "is great if you're in a class / using video / using audio / great teacher / etc etc..." and the truth is, when you have that much enrichment anyway, you don't need a very good book (which is the only time when using this book is acceptable). And the "listening comprehension" CD? It's much more useful as a coaster. A coaster that might cost you a whole paycheck.

Gripes:

-Never provides ANY blocks of words/pronunciations in chapters (even when it does, it tends to have whole phrases translated, not word-by-word breakdowns like you need, especially in the beginning). You have to learn 90% of your words on your own, and then try to figure out what's going on in the book based on your own knowledge. This is an almost absurd problem considering the price.

-Randomly tosses around different dialects of German with little division. Without a professor keeping you informed, you might not even notice some of the differences. My fiancee was dismayed to learn that I wasn't learning the same dialect that she knows (and her dialect is High German, which is the one you're "supposed" to learn in an introductory class). I think I'm learning a more Southern or Austrian dialect. Is that the book's fault or my professor's? Since the book doesn't help, I have absolutely no clue!

-The CD is truly worthless. It barely follows the book, and doesn't provide ANY quick access to any necessary elements. It doesn't have access to very much in the way of pronunciation at all- nearly all of the CD is composed of text application of the words with little or no motivation except as practice for what you should have learned before (except there is no "learning before"- in the book or CD). Inexcusable.

-No answer keys. The book might have you learn new phrases with something like "figure out which of the following phrases are greetings or goodbyes", and unless you ask a professor, you might never know. Again, it's just amazing that a book would cost so much and not contain something like this.

-How can you learn a language when the book never really teaches anything new, and just keeps expecting you to apply knowledge that it doesn't give? It makes no sense!

Counterpoints:

-It's... kind of pretty. If you don't mind that a lot of the pictures aren't properly explained. And those pictures are example exercises in the chapter... yeah, you'll mind.

If you HAVE to have this book for your class, just hope it's a good class. This book seems near-worthless for trying to teach yourself, which as any student knows, is critically important to ANY language class. Listen in class, and don't expect the book to be of much help.

So what do I reccomend?

Even if you class doesn't reccomend it, try to find the two workbooks/lab manuals that go along with the book. Frankly, I've found that they sometimes do a better job of teaching than the book does. AND they have answer keys to help you check your progress. Sadly, however, the manuals don't come with the necessary listening CDs, so you're still going to be left out in the cold for most of the experience. Again, just ridiculous.

Overall:

-If you're taking a German class, and this is the book, you don't have much choice anyway.

-Which is to say, if you're not taking a class and you're learning on your own, virtually any other book does a better job.

One would think that with 5 revisions, the authors of Na Klar! Would have tried to make it a little bit more user friendly. Since English and German have many cognates, the authors like to encourage a great deal of guessing of meaning in this book. This is perfectly fine, but then I think that there should be a translation or at least a vocabulary bank for advertisements, newspaper articles, ticket stubs, etc. with vocabulary that hasn't been introduced before. A lot of the exercise have this "Hey! English and German are similar, so let's guess our way through this newspaper article with a bunch of words and grammar that you haven't learned yet!" feel to it.
I'm surprised that there is not a whole chapter devoted to just pronunciation. Not all German classes are taught by native German speakers, and I think that this needs to be addressed by a pronunciation of the German alphabet and all words on a CD by native speakers (more on this later).
There needs to be better coordination between the lab book, workbook, and the main text. What I would like to see is a vocabulary bank for each Kapitel that covers all the words from all three books at the end of the chapter in the main book. I think the CD would be more helpful if all of the vocabulary items were pronounced by a native German speaker. Sometimes students may not remember how to pronounce something a few days after class, and having such a resource on CD would be most helpful.
I would actually prefer it if the authors had gone for a text based on the Audio Lingual Method of teaching language, i.e.: "Hans went to the park; Mary went to the department store; Hans went to the park on Tuesday; Mary went to the park on Wednesday; Hans went to the park with Mary on Tuesday; Mary went to the stadium with Hans on Friday; Hans went to the park with Mary on Tuesday to meet some friends; etc." The essence of this method is taking the simplest of structures and then building them up gradually into more and more complex sentences through continual rote listening and repeating. Although this method can be boring for some people, man does it work.
I have both the 4th and 5th editions and the changes are so incredibly minor. The authors and publishers have simply changed the names of people in the examples dialogues and added a couple exercises. I don't think that this merits charging over $100.
I encourage the authors to truly make a superior textbook for the 6th edition. If they do a fabulous job with revision (or even re-write the book from the ground up), then perhaps they can sell it for $80. Until then, my rating for this book is a "2."

UPDATE: After having used this book in class for 2 months, I honestly have to say that the material is just all over the place. The authors really should've tried to aim for some kind of organization, and then after that, they should've gotten it edited by a team of linguists and language teachers. I agree with the other poster that not including an answer key to just plain bizarre. I'd really prefer to drop my rating to 1 star, but Amazon won't let me.

UPDATE 20090902: The amount of new vocabulary thrown out there and not listed in the glossary or at the end of the chapter reaches a fever pitch starting in Kapitel 5. Seriously, schools teaching beginning German shouldn't use this heinous excuse for a textbook.

Not so user-friendly

I really wish this book had instructions in English. I'm okay with the practice being in German. But when you're a beginning student, it takes you twice as long to get through the exercises because you have to look up what the directions are asking you to do.

The chapters and grammar points don't seem to follow intuitive order for new language learners. I have studied three other non-English languages and wasn't as confused by the order of introduction to new vocabulary and grammar. A more advanced concept will be thrown into the mix and will leave you wondering if it was explained earlier or not. (Chances are it wasn't). This book introduces new concepts but only gives you a few practice questions. So you will have to do more than the book and lab manuals to really hone in on the way this language works.

All in all, I wish there was an easier book to work with. My use of this book is accompanied by a separate dictionary and the Living Language German grammar coursebook, which explains German grammar rules in straightforward, simpler terms.

In this monumental biography of one of Russia's-and the 20th century's-greatest poets, Reeder, editor of the poet's complete works, deftly combines incisive literary analysis with a complex portrait of Akhmatova (1889-1966) and her turbulent times. Initially influenced by the Symbolists and Imagists, the poet became more oracular, moving from the "chamber intimacy" of her earlier work to poetry that increasingly addressed the oppressiveness of the Russian people: "I-am your voice," one poem proclaims. So fervently did Akhmatova embrace this role that Stalin's regime suppressed her poetry for 20 years. Drawing upon interviews with the poet's friends and colleagues, some interviewed for the first time for publication, Reeder humanizes a woman lionized by the Russian people. Oppressed by governmental scrutiny, she was sometimes afraid to commit poetry to paper, relying instead on her memory and on those of her friends. Her romantic entanglements with Modigliani and Pasternak (whose persistent advances she rebuffed), as well as a sense of self-mockery about her exalted status, give further depth to Reeder's absorbing study. "The chamber intimacy of Akhmatova... what meaning [does it] have for our harsh, iron age?" asked the poet Vladimir Mayakovsky in the early days of the revolution. That intimacy has in fact proved remarkably enduring, but for decades Akhmatova faced censure, deprivation, and the imprisonment and death of loved ones before her genius-recognized in the early 1900s-was again acknowledged by the regime. Reeder, editor of The Complete Works of Anna Akhamatova (LJ 4/1/90), does not emulate her subject's spare, lucid verse, offering instead a richly detailed, exhaustively-indeed, exhaustingly-researched work. She brings in other writers with whom Akhmatova was linked, analyzing and quoting from their works as well as Akhmatova's, and while the result is a nice overview of the era, the poet does get lost in the process. Reeder seems to have hunted down every last reminiscence, however peripheral, and some filtering might have resulted in a stronger portrait. Still, this major study of a major poet usefully assembles a breadth of material. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries.

One of Russia's greatest poets, Akhmatova (1889-1966) was born as the curtain fell on Imperial Russia and lived to endure and write about the deprivations and horrors of the Soviet regime. A profoundly private person, Akhmatova is not an easy subject for a in-depth psychological portrait, but Reeder has done well with the material at hand, illuminating both Akhmatova and her world. Akhmatova's childhood was not a happy one, but she felt a distinct sense of destiny about her future, a prescience she possessed throughout her difficult life. Her first book of poems, Evening, was published in 1912 and Akhmatova, slender and regal, was soon at the very center of St. Petersburg's literary circle. An admirer of Pushkin, Akhmatova created emotional resonance with simple words linked in unexpected combinations. She also managed to fill her poems with the sort of dynamic psychology found in the novels of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. Deeply patriotic, Akhmatova refused to leave her poor crushed country even after she was no longer allowed to publish, and her son was imprisoned and tortured. A woman of courage and immense spiritual strength, Akhmatova lived a life of calm dignity and integrity under a reign of terror, all the while writing poetry radiant with beauty, sorrow, and forgiveness. Indigestible

This is an exhaustively researched biography; no stone is left unturned in the names, places, dates and events of the poet Akhmatova's life. However, Reeder doesn't seem to manage compiling the mountain of data into a flowing narrative. The effect is a bit like watching a homemade movie made with a handheld camera, constantly zooming around and giving a sudden close-up of something. Suddenly, you'll get several pages in which she heavily excerpts other works about a particular person's life, even at the expense of shining any light on Akhamatova herself. In the section she devotes to the poet Osip Mandelstam, we are suddenly told that he "had the brilliant idea of getting a cow" to survive his exile. In fact, his widow Nadezhda wrote in her superlative memoir that getting a cow was her idea and (Osip) was "not keen on my plan ... 'Nothing ever comes of such schemes,' he said." Ultimately, Reeder's biography feels a bit clinical. She does a good job at analyzing the poetry, but Akhmatova herself eludes us. About the Author

John J. Crowley is president and CEO of Cancer Research and Biostatistics (CRAB), Seattle, Washington, director of the SWOG Statistical Center, and a faculty member at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The author or coauthor of more than 350 refereed articles, book chapters, and other publications, Dr. Crowley is a fellow of the American Statistical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the International Biometrics Society, the American Society for Clinical Oncology, and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer. He received his BA (1968) from Pomona College, Claremont, California, and his MS (1970) and PhD (1973) in biomathematics from the University of Washington, Seattle.

Antje Hoering, PhD, is a senior biostatistician at Cancer Research and Biostatistics (CRAB), Seattle, Washington. She is also an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Washington and an affiliate investigator at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Dr. Hoering is the lead statistician of the SWOG Myeloma Committee, the SWOG Early Therapeutics Subcommittee, and the Stand Up To Cancer, Pancreatic Dream Team. She is the coordinating statistician for the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy, the International Myeloma Committee, and the Pancreatic Cancer Research Team. She serves as a consultant on a variety of industry-sponsored studies and has been the biostatistics representative on two Type B meetings with the FDA. She is member of the American Statistical Association, the International Biometrics Society, and the International Myeloma Society. She received her BS (1985) from the University of Tubingen, Germany, her MS (1988) in physics from Oregon State University, Corvallis, and her PhD (1991) in physics from the Max Planck Institute for Theoretical Nuclear Physics, Heidelberg, Germany. She transitioned into biostatistics with a three-year NRSA postdoctoral fellowship with the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
